NEW YORK UNIVERSITY BLANKS NJCU WOMEN’S SOCCER, 6-0

NEW YORK, NY…Junior forward Jaclyn Thayer (Corona del Mar, CA/Corona del Mar) scored twice in the opening 13:21 of the first half, and New York University built up a 4-0 halftime advantage, en route to a 6-0 shutout win over New Jersey City University in a women’s soccer game at Riverbank State Park in Manhattan, late Tuesday. It was the first-ever meeting between the schools in women’s soccer.
 
NYU, which opened the season with three consecutive losses, won its second straight to improve to 2-3. NJCU dropped to 0-3-1 with its second straight loss. NYU outshot the Gothic Knights, 32-0, including 21-0 in the first half.
 
Thayer scored an unassisted goal at 5:46, and then made it 2-0 on a deflection off a pass from sophomore midfielder Jennifer Tavares (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) at 13:21.
 
Sophomore midfielder Mallory Tomaro (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Seaholm) added an unassisted goal at 29:18, before freshman midfielder Bianca Molina (Waterford, CT/Waterford) knocked a goal inside the far post exactly 42 seconds later (30:00).
 
Sophomore midfielder Michelle Gore (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Regional) scored the Violets’ fourth unassisted goal of the game for a 5-0 lead at 45:45, before freshman midfielder Laura Donnelly (Goshen, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) capped the scoring at 58:17 off a corner kick from senior midfielder Tatiana Perea (Dallas, TX/Ursuline Academy).
 
Freshman goalkeeper CASSANDRA ZIENIUK (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) made 11 saves in 73:26 minutes of action for NJCU. Freshman keeper ADRIELE DaSILVA (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side) played the final 16:33, and made one stop in her career collegiate debut in net. Freshman keeper Kaitlin Barnes (Jamaica Plain, MA/Boston Latin School) recorded the shutout without being tested.
 
NJCU plays its fourth game in five days on Wednesday, September 15 when it hosts Centenary College at 3:30 pm in its season opener as part of a Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
