NEW YORK, NY…Freshman setter NADIA DaSILVA (Newark, NJ/Science) delivered 36 assists, and freshman middle blocker LIZZELLE CINTRON (Newark, NJ/Elizabeth) pounded out 18 more kills, as the New Jersey City University women’s volleyball team won its fifth consecutive match by sweeping John Jay College, 3-0, by a 30-28, 30-16, 30-22 margin.

NJCU (5-1) maintains pace with the 1992 club for the best start to a season in school history. That year, the Gothic Knights began the year at 6-1, a mark the 2004 squad can tie when they visit SUNY-Old Westbury on Thursday, September 16 at 7pm. John Jay is 0-2 overall.

The five-match winning streak is the longest since capturing eight straight contests from October 22 to November 3, 2002. The Gothic Knights own a 14-2 advantage all-time in the series with John Jay, and have won the last 10 meetings since 1994.

DaSilva continued to distribute the ball very well in the first month of her collegiate career, and contributed three service aces and two assisted blocks in the win. Her ball placement allowed NJCU to hit a stellar .363 as a team with 38 kills (38-9-80).

Cintron finished with 18 kills and just four errors in 24 swings for an outstanding .583 percentage, and defended 12 digs.

Also for NJCU, freshman outside hitter GLORINELL PEREZ (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) posted 10 kills (10-3-26), hit .269, and tallied three aces and 12 digs.

Freshman middle blocker MEAGAN ROBERTS (Union, NJ/Union), the third All-Union-County standout on this year’s roster, made her first career start after recovering from a pre-season knee injury, and hit .333 at the net, landing eight kills with just one error (8-1-21) and stuffed two blocks.

Senior outside hitter CHRISTINA COCUCCI (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) also had a solid match with 14 digs and three aces. Sophomore JENNA GADINO (West New York, NJ/Memorial) started at opposite, and added seven digs and two aces.
