VASSAR DEFEATS NJCU, 7-1, IN FIRST WOMEN’S SOCCER MEETING

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY…Vassar College received two goals a piece from senior forward Sarah Combs (Anchorage, AK/Robert Service) and senior midfielder Margaret Daniel (Tyler, TX/John Tyler) and two assists from junior midfielder Ashley Willhite (Royalston, MA/Wilbraham & Monson) and outshot New Jersey City University, 40-4, en route to a 7-1 victory in a women’s soccer game at Prentiss Field.
 
The loss for NJCU (0-5-1) is its third straight, while the Brewers evened their record at 2-2. This was the first-ever meeting between the schools in women’s soccer.
 
Five different players scored a goal for Vassar, and five of its goals were unassisted as the Brewers outshot NJCU 20-2 in each half.
 
Vassar took a 2-0 lead into the half, as Combs got the home team on the board at 15:09, before Daniel netted the eventual game-winner at 34:28.
 
In the second half, the Brewers received scoring from freshman midfielder Claire Beitcher (Santa Monica, CA/Santa Monica) at 53:27 and a took a 4-0 lead 51 seconds later when sophomore midfielder Kate Bossange (Saratoga, CA/Lynbrook) tallied a goal at 54:19.
 
Daniel and Combs connected on back-to-back goals assisted by Willhite in a span of 25 seconds (63:46 and 64:11) for a 6-0 advantage.
 
NJCU junior forward CARINE CARVALHEIRO (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side) converted a direct kick for her second goal of the season at 66:31 to trim the deficit to 6-1, before Vassar junior forward Jenny Baumwoll (Newton, MA/Newton South) capped the scoring with 43 seconds left in the game.
 
In defeat, freshman goalkeeper ADRIELE DaSILVA (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side) registered 17 saves in her first collegiate start in net. NJCU also made one team save. Sophomore keeper Lisa Strumwasser (Malibu, CA/Santa Monica) stopped one shot for the Brewers.
 
The Gothic Knights return to action on Saturday, September 25 at 12pm, when NJCU visits the College of Staten Island, in what will be the first meeting between those schools in women’s soccer.
