JERSEY CITY, NJ…In its 2004 home opener, New Jersey City University mounted a comeback from a first-game defeat, to handle Montclair State University, 3-1, by scores of 25-30, 30-14, 30-28, 30-23, in a women’s volleyball match at the Athletic & Fitness Center.
NJCU improves to 7-2 overall with its first win over Montclair State since 2001, and only its third victory ever over the Red Hawks (3-17). MSU (4-11) has lost 10 of its last 11 matches.
For the Gothic Knights, freshman middle blocker LIZZELLE CINTRON (Newark, NJ/Elizabeth), gave a stellar performance, pounding out a match-high 23 kills with only five errors in 43 attacks, while adding 24 digs, three blocks and two aces.
Freshman middle blocker MEAGAN ROBERTS (Union, NJ/Union) also reached double digits in kills with 10 (10-5-19)
Freshman setter NADIA DaSILVA (Newark, NJ/Science) delivered 41 assists for a second consecutive match and defended 12 digs.) defended 19 digs and landed seven kills and two aces. Freshman outside hitter GLORINELL PEREZ (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) and LUCILLE VILLAPLANA (Newark, NJ/Barringer) each posted five kills for NJCU.
The Red Hawks were led by sisters Heather Aciz (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) and Tiffany Aciz (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) with 11 kills each, while junior blocker Kelly McGuire (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Northern Highlands) added nine kills. Sophomore outside hitter Asia Livingston (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) contributed eight kills.
The next match for NJCU will be the second WIAC tri-match play-date of the season when the Knights face Centenary College and Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, September 25, at 11 am in Hackettstown, NJ.
