STATEN ISLAND, NY…New Jersey City University bounced back from a 1-0 deficit, as senior midfielder CARINA NETO (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side), freshman forward KATIE FEEHAN (Manasquan, NJ/Wall), and rookie forward KELLY DALY (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) each notched their first collegiate goals, en route to the Gothic Knights defeating the College of Staten Island, 3-1, in a non-conference women’s soccer game.
The win is the first of the year for NJCU (1-5-1), and ends a four-game losing streak. It was the first-ever meeting between NJCU and Staten Island in women’s soccer. The Dolphins, in their first year, are 0-4 overall.
CSI gained a 1-0 lead just 2:43 into the contest when sophomore midfielder Danielle Otaiza (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) went in on a breakaway for her first goal of the year.
However, NJCU tied it early in the opening half when Feehan, who finished with three points, tracked down a rebound in the box and fed a pass to Neto for the tying goal at 14:27.
Feehan registered the eventual game-winner just under four minutes later, as the rookie dribbled a distance through the Dolphin defense, and netted her first collegiate goal at 18:25 for a 2-1 lead.
It remained a one-goal game at the half, before Daly added an important insurance goal just under four minutes into the second period, when she knocked in a saved rebound at 48:56, off an initial shot from junior forward CARINE CARVALHEIRO (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side). The assist gives Carvalheiro five points on the season. She attempted a team-high six shots in the game.
The NJCU defense held Staten Island scoreless in the second half to preserve the 3-1 triumph. The Knights outshot CSI, 17-14 overall.
Freshman goalkeeper ADRIELE DaSILVA (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side) registered six saves to earn her first collegiate victory, while playing the first 45 minutes. Freshman CASSANDRA ZIENIUK (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) guarded the NJCU net in the second half, and made two saves without allowing a goal in 45 minutes. CSI junior keeper Jennifer Miller (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) made six saves in defeat.
Associate Head Coach BRIAN BARROW guided the Gothic Knights to the victory while the men’s soccer team—10-0 winners over Hunter College—were in action at home.
The Gothic Knights return to action on Monday, September 27 at 3:30 pm, when NJCU hosts the City College of New York. NJCU routed the Beavers, 13-1, in last year’s meeting between the clubs, as Carvalheiro had a record-setting day with six goals and three assists for 15 points.
