NEW YORK, NY…New York University scored on a one-timer from sophomore midfielder Kyle Wagner (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington) at 55:42 of the second half and held the high-powered New Jersey City University scoring offense in check, as the Violets held on for a 1-0 victory Wednesday night on an artificial turf field at Riverbank State Park.
NJCU, which had won its last three games all via shutout, falls to 7-3 overall. The Wagner goal ended NJCU’s consecutive minutes scoreless streak to 346:46—the fourth longest streak in school history. NYU (5-2-1) has won three in a row. The Violets leads the all-time series, which began in 1960, 4-1. Ironically, NJCU defeated NYU by the same 1-0 score in 2003.
The goal was set-up when Matthew Mayne aired out a ball form midfield into the box, which Wagner banged in off the right post for the lone goal. The game was scoreless at halftime.
NJCU, which outshot NYU, 16-14, including 9-6 in the first half, had several unlucky close calls in the first half. Junior forward CHRIS ROSENTHAL (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) blasted a shot off the crossbar, while junior midfielder JOHAN GONZALEZ (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) and senior forward ADRIAN RUIZ (Fairview, NJ/Dickinson) had shots strike the post in the first 10 minutes of the contest.
Freshman goalkeeper Daniel Baker (Oyster Bay, NY/Friends Academy) made seven saves while posting his third shutout victory of the year. Senior goalkeeper BABA GUISSE (Jersey City, NJ/Lycee Eugene Delacroix, France) made one stop.
NJCU returns to action on Saturday, October 2 at 2pm when the Gothic Knights host Vassar College at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field. It will be the first-ever meeting between the schools in men’s soccer.
