Morgan Zimm (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) scored twice in the first half, and the Scarlet Raiders added a pair of tallies in a span of 45 seconds in the second half as Rutgers University-Newark bounced back from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat
New Jersey City University, 4-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women’s soccer game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
NJCU had built a 1-0 lead at 14:21 as sophomore forward
KELLY DALY (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) scored her seventh goal of the season.
NJCU falls to 1-9-0 overall and 0-6-0 in the NJAC with its ninth straight loss. Rutgers-Newark wins its first league contest of the season, ending a four-game losing streak while improving to 4-6-1 overall and 1-4-0 in the NJAC. Newark leads the all-time series, 6-0.
Freshman forward Jess Sapienza (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) added her fourth goal of the season and an assist, while sophomore midfielder Alex Gastulo (Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley) chipped in her second score of the season.

CARINE CARVALHEIRO (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side),
Daly dribbled through two defenders and fooled the keeper at 14:21, knocking in the Gothic Knights’ first goal in 270:27. It was NJCU’s first lead on a conference opponent this season and
Carvalheiro’s third assist.
Zimm tied it at 23:41 with her first goal of the season as she lofted a shot just over the outstretched arms of NJCU’s keeper and inside the crossbar. Sophomore midfielder Jen Sanker (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) was credited with her first assist of the year. It ended a scoreless drought of 372:29 for RN.
Zimm put the Raiders in front to stay at 40:16 when she made a steal on the right wing and from steps inside the endline, lifted a shot that found nylon on a difficult angle. The goal was unassisted.
With NJCU threatening, Newark solidified its lead at 68:46, as a thru ball by freshman midfielder Erin Marshall (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) created a breakaway for Sapienza, who finished the play with a shot from the left wing that sailed past NJCU’s approaching keeper. The assist was the second of the year for Marshall.
Less than a minute later, Newark added even more insurance, to move ahead 4-1. A shot by
Sapienza from the near left wing was batted away by NJCU sophomore
ALEXIS CHISARI (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus),
but
Gastulo was there to tap the rebound inside the right post. The assist for
Sapienza gives her five, and 13 points.
The Raiders outshot NJCU 32-16, with a +8 differential in each period. Newark hit the crossbar three times, and had a 10-5 edge in corner kicks.
Chisari made nine saves for NJCU, including two outstanding stops in the second half to keep NJCU in the game.
Sophomore Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) came off the bench to make one save and record the win in 58:55 of action. Senior Ashley Woodruff (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) started for Newark, and made one save in 31:05, before she was forced to leave after being shaken up.
NJCU returns to action on Monday, October 3 at 3:30 p.m. with a road contest against the City College of New York in New York, NY. NJCU lead the all-time series with the Beavers, 6-0, and have outscored CCNY, 44-3. Newark will host DeSales University on October 4 at 7 p.m.
