JERSEY CITY, NJ…Freshman forward Samantha Flynn (Lindenwold, NJ/Lindenwold) came off the bench and scored twice in the final 5:15 of the second half, to break open a 1-1 game, and lifted William Paterson University to a 3-1 victory over New Jersey City University, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women’s soccer game played on the football field at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. The game was played against strong, gusty winds, blowing in off of Newark Bay.

In defeat sophomore forward KELLY DALY (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), who tied the game at 1-1 in the 77th minute, notched her 13th goal of the season, breaking the single-season record of 12 achieved by Michelle Reilly in 1994.

With the victory the Pioneers end a two-game losing streak and conclude their season with a record of 6-12-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the NJAC. NJCU (4-14-0) completes its conference schedule at 0-9-0, and drops its second straight game, with one contest remaining.

WPU outshot NJCU 29-8 overall, including 16-4 in the second half. The Pioneers had a 12-0 edge in corner kicks. There were 18 fouls whistled with 15 charged to NJCU.

In defeat, sophomore keeper KASANDRA ZIENIUK (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) made seven saves, <dfn><a href=KASANDRA ZIENIUK" src="/images/wsoccer/2005/10/26/09-15-04%20Cassandra%20Zieniuk%2012.jpg" width=150 align=left border=0>including three outstanding diving stops to thwart certain goals. Junior Meaghan Koppel (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) stopped two shots in the victory for WPU.

After a scoreless first half, it remained 0-0 until the 74th minute. After a turnover and failed clear by an NJCU defender on the far right wing, and just outside the box, WPU sophomore forward Katie Lederman (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township) got to the loose ball before Zieniuk could cut off the shot, and at lobbed a shot at 73:06 into the open net for her second goal of the season.

Exactly three minutes later, NJCU got even, as sophomore midfielder TARA LAKE (Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) created a breakaway with a thru ball up the middle, and Daly lofted her record-breaking goal over Koppel, as she charged to cut off the angle. The assist was Lake’s sixth of the season.

After Flynn, who entered the game at halftime, missed the left post on a 2-on-1 breakaway at 82:57, and Zieniuk made a terrific stop on the right post to prevent a goal by freshman forward Amanda Kurdyla (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls), a Gothic Knight turnover led to the eventual winner.

At 84:45, Flynn tracked down a loose ball in the box, and flipped a shot inside the right post. It was her third goal of the season and first game-winner.

At 86:44, it looked like Flynn would add another, before Zieniuk made a brilliant diving stop of a one-timer near the right post. However, that insurance goal did come 42 seconds later, as freshman  defender Samantha Diamond  (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) sent a pass over the NJCU defense from midfield, which Flynn buried on a breakaway at 87:26, capping the scoring with her fourth goal.

NJCU had several quality chances in the early stages of the game. Daly just missed the near post on a steal and breakaway at 29:37 of the first half. Lake had a solid chance at 62:24, as she missed wide left on a 1-on-1 breakaway off a Pioneer turnover.

At halftime of the game, NJCU honored its two seniors, midfielder CARINE CARVALHEIRO (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side), the school’s all-time leader in goals (26), assists (20), and points (72), and sweeper JACKIE PETTY (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), a four-year defensive standout who ranks second all-time in games, starts, and minutes played.

NJCU will conclude its 13th season of soccer on Saturday, October 29 at 12 p.m. when it hosts Mount St. Mary College (NY) on the Gerrity Complex football field
