NEW YORK, NY…The City College of New York built a 3-1 lead over
New Jersey City University, and despite being outshot by NJCU, 18-13, held on for a 3-2 victory in a non-conference women’s soccer game on Monday afternoon.
NJCU falls to 1-10-0 overall with its 10th straight loss. CCNY (2-5) has won two straight. It was the first win for the Beavers against NJCU in seven meetings. NJCU still owns a 46-6 goal margin in the series.
Sophomore forward Tivere Shemi (New York, NY/MCSM) gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead at 6:19 on an unassisted shot from 10 yards out on the left wing.
A steal by senior midfielder
CARINE CARVALHEIRO (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side) led to a chance from 15 yards out, which she buried into the left corner at 11:45 for her third goal of the season and her second game-tying score. It was the 24
th goal of her career.
Junior Nastassia Bennett (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) put the Beavers in front to stay at 37:06 when she netted a shot from 20 yards out. CCNY led 2-1 at the half, and held an 8-7 shots advantage.
CCNY extended its lead to 3-1 at 50:55 as junior midfielder Jessica Tibbets (New York, NY/Wichita East, KS) tracked down a rebound and slipped it into the net.
Sophomore forward
KATIE FEEHAN (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) shaved the deficit to 3-2 at 64:18 as she headed in a corner kick from junior defender
REEM HANA (Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy). It was
Feehan’s fourth goal of the year, and
Hana’s first assist at NJCU.
However, despite an 11-5 edge in second half shots, NJCU could not tie it over the final 25:42 of action, as the Beavers held on for the win.
In defeat, sophomore
ALEXIS CHISARI (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) thwarted three shots. Sophomore
Marcella Dawson (Bronx, NY/Julia Richman) stopped nine shots for CCNY.
NJCU looks to return to the win column on Wednesday, October 5 at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference game against the College of Staten Island at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
