JERSEY CITY, NJ…New Jersey City University received goals from junior midfielder LUCY LONGOBUCCO (Harrison, NJ/Harrison), senior midfielder CARINE CARVALHEIRO (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side) and the eventual winner from sophomore forward KELLY DALY (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), and outshot the College of Staten Island, 42-11, while defeating the Dolphins, 3-2, in a non-conference women’s soccer game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.

NJCU improves to 2-10-0 overall by snapping a 10-game losing streak. CSI is 4-6. NJCU has won both meetings in the series which began in 2004.

NJCU led 2-1 at the half behind a 22-6 shot advantage, and owned a 20-5 edge in the second half. The Gothic Knights controlled the game offensively, and were called for 17 offsides, breaking the school record of 13 on two occasions, most recently in October 2004.

Daly tied her career-high with nine shots, the fourth time she has attempted that many in a game. Carvalheiro and Longobucco each launched eight shots.

A thru ball from Daly out of the left wing set Longobucco up on a breakaway, which she finished for her first goal of the season and the second of her three-year career. The assist was Daly’s first.

At 15:44 junior forward Lauren Baydal (Staten Island, NY/S.I.Tech) evened the game at 1-1, as junior defender Burkurije Begai (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) chipped a ball into the box, which Baydal tapped inside the right post, for her first goal of the year. It was Begai’s second assist.

NJCU pulled in front 2-1 at 33:44, and would not trail again. Sophomore midfielder TARA LAKE (Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) booted a thru ball onto the right sideline, where sophomore midfielder KATIE FEEHAN (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) lifted a cross into the box. There, Carvalheiro netted the breakaway goal for her fourth goal of the season and the 25th of her career. Lake and Feehan were both credited with assists, their third and fourth of the season, respectively.

The Knights added an important insurance goal at 76:26, as junior defender REEM HANA (Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy) sent a thru ball from midfield onto the right wing, where Daly blasted home her team-leading eighth goal of the season and 17th point. The assist was the second this year for Hana.

The third goal proved to be the game-winner, as freshman midfielder Fiosa Begai (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) swiped a ball from a NJCU defender on the left side of the box, caught the keeper off the line, and sailed a shot into the right corner, to shave the lead to 3-2 at 85:17. The unassisted goal with only 4:43 remaining was her second of the season.

The score could have been much higher if not for the goalkeeping of junior Andrea Cundari (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa), who made 21 saves in the contest. She thwarted six breakaway chances in the game, and made several other outstanding stops to prevent quality opportunities by NJCU. The Knights also hit one post. CSI added a team save, clearing a first half shot off the line.

NJCU has been plagued by injuries recently, and freshman defender AZIZA HANA (Iselin, NJ/John F. Kennedy), a starter all season on defense, made her first career appearance in goal. She made three saves in the first half to register her first career victory. Feehan became NJCU’s fourth goalkeeper this season when she played the entire second half, without making a save.

NJCU will return to action on Saturday, October 8 at 3 p.m. against Mount St. Mary College (NY) as part of a men’s/women’s soccer doubleheader at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
