SELINSGROVE, PA…Senior swingman MARK WASHINGTON (East Orange, NJ/West Side) collected 22 points and eight rebounds, and junior center DEVIN DAVIS (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional) added 19 points, with game-highs of 12 rebounds, six assists, and four blocks, as New Jersey City University never trailed, and roasted Chestnut Hill College, 98-78, in the consolation game of the 17^th annual Pepsi/Weis Markets Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Susquehanna University at O.W. Houts Gymnasium.

              

NJCU evens its record at 1-1 overall while CHC falls to 0-2. It was the first meeting between the schools in basketball. The Gothic Knights led 52-37 at the half and owned a 31-15 edge in points off turnovers. NJCU scored 56 of its 98 points in the paint.

 

Washington, an All-Tournament team selection, scored 16 of his 22 in the second half, and finished shooting 8-of-13, with five of his eight rebounds on the offensive glass. While playing only 24 minutes, it was the 22nd consecutive game he has reached double figures in scoring, and the fourth straight with 20-plus points. Overall, it marked his 21st career 20-point effort. NJCU is 13-8 all-time when he scores 20.

 

Washington moved into 16^th place in school history in scoring with 1168 points, passing Omar Cooper (1150, 1994-96, 99-00) and Ed Peterson (1148, 1962-66).

Freshman forward DASHAN MARTIN (Rahway, NJ/Rahway), who did not score in his career debut on Friday, hit all five shots he attempted, and finished with 10 points in 12 minutes.

 

Sophomore guard CHARLES COLES (Hillside, NJ/Hillside) had nine points. Senior guard ROB FREENEY (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) added eight, and junior point guard ALEX MIRABEL (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson), chipped in seven, while each provided three assists.

 

All 13 players on the NJCU roster saw at least eight minutes of action; no player logged more than 24 minutes.

              

The Griffins were led by junior guard Shawn Bolling (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty), who tallied a game-high 24 points (10-of-13), with six assists and three steals. Junior guard Isaac Greer (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) had 14 points on 6-of-12, while freshman guard Dwight Lyons (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) added 12 points. Freshman forward Antonio Grubisic (Osijek, Croatia/Subiaco Academy) contributed 10 points in defeat. No CHC player had more than five rebounds.

              

NJCU shot 53.4 percent overall (39-73), following near 60-percent shooting in the first half (21-36, 58.3%). CHC shot 45.3 percent for the game (29-64) after making more than half its first half chances (16-31, 51.6%). NJCU held a 46-39 edge on the glass and an 18-9 margin in second chance points.

              

The Knights scored the first six points of the game and exploded to a 15-5 lead on a Davis steal and fast-break dunk less than five minutes into the game. After a Martin lay-up with 8:52 left in the first half, NJCU led by double-digits the remainder of the game. The Knights led by as many as 17 on three instances in the first half, behind Davis, who had 10 points and seven rebounds in the opening period.

              

Leading 60-46 with 15:28 left in the game, a 19-6 spurt gave NJCU a 79-52, 27-point margin with 11:02 remaining. The Knights’ largest lead was 29, 83-54 following a Martin lay-up with 9:47 on the board.

              

NJCU will open the 2005-06 New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule on Tuesday, November 22 at 8 p.m. with a road game against Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ.
