PITMAN, NJ…After scoring four goals in two games, including the game-winner in
New Jersey City University’s 2-1 victory over DeSales University in the LaRoche College Soccer 2005 Cup Challenge on Sunday, sophomore forward
MARCELO CARPIO (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) has been named the
New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Carpio, a transfer from Fairleigh Dickinson University, is the third NJCU player to receive the award since 2003, even with the Gothic Knights competing as an independent last year. He currently leads the team with four goals and eight points on the season. NJCU is 1-1 overall this year.
Carpio’s weekend debut for NJCU was an offensive showcase as he netted two goals in each game, with go-ahead goals in each contest. In a Sunday, September 4 win over DeSales, he netted two first half goals for NJCU. His first score came in the 10th minute and gave the Knights a 1-0 advantage. His second goal in the 26th minute proved to be the game winner.
Although NJCU fell to Albright on Saturday, September 3, 4-3, in the season opener, Carpio tied the game and scored the go-ahead goal, putting the Knights in position to win.
After Albright took a 1-0 lead, Carpio tied the game at 1-1 in the 29th minute, before he rifled in a penalty kick in the 54th minute, giving NJCU a 3-2 advantage.
