CENTERVILLE, MA…New Jersey City University junior sprinter ANTHONY CAMPBELL (Jersey City, NJ/Snyder) has been named the ECAC Division III Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 400-meter dash for the second consecutive week to begin his 2005-06 season, when he placed first of 62 runners in 49.12 seconds, against a predominantly Division I field at the University of Maryland Invitational on Saturday, January 21.

The award marks the second time in Campbell’s career he has been acknowledged with a weekly award from the Eastern College Athletic Conference, after previously sharing the distinction on January 18, 2005, in his first week as an athlete at the University. It is the third time this season the Division III Track Athlete of the Week award has gone to an NJCU sprinter, and the fourth time a Gothic Knight men’s indoor athlete has won the award since the sport was re-introduced at the University four years ago in 2002-03.

The award also marks the second consecutive week that the NJCU men’s track and field team has swept every ECAC Division III award. On January 17, the Gothic Knights claimed both the ECAC Division III Track and Division III Field Athlete of the Week awards, when sophomore ANTHONY MILES (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) and junior HYRON GRIFFITH (Jersey City, NJ/Combermere Secondary, Barbados) scored the accolades. This week, Griffith won the Field Athlete of the Week again as the Gothic Knights received each of the two weekly honors handed out by the ECAC.

Campbell won the 400-dash in convincing fashion in the Maryland Invitational at the PGSL Center in Landover, MD, after also winning the event at the Yale University Invitational on January 14. That was his first race of the season after not competing in December.

Additionally, Campbell placed second of 53 athletes in the 200-meter dash at the Maryland Invitational in 22.23 seconds, and tops among Division III sprinters, finishing only behind Bowie State University’s Bruce Owens (21.98).

Campbell also ran the third leg of the 4x400-meter relay which listed fourth of 22 overall and second among all Division III teams in 3:20.60, despite falling midway through the race after a collision, while challenging for first place.

Currently, Campbell ranks fourth nationally of all Division III track athletes in the 400 dash, and 11th in the 55-meter dash. The 4x400-relay has the third fastest time in the nation.
