NEWARK, NJ…Rutgers-Newark scored three goals in five minutes to take a 4-0 lead and defeated New Jersey City University, 5-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women’s soccer match played under a steady rain at Alumni Field on Wednesday. The game was called at the 70 minute mark—once it became an official game—because of lightning in the area and dangerous field conditions from the heavy rain.

With the win, Newark improves to 6-7-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the NJAC. The Gothic Knights fall to 3-10-0 overall and 0-6-0 in the conference.

Junior midfielder Alison Phillips (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) scored twice for the Scarlet Raiders, who also received two assists from junior defender Alex Marcus (Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City)

Sophomore forward Jess Sapienza (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) delivered what proved to be the game-winning goal at 5:38 on a breakaway off a thru ball from Marcus.

Phillips made it 3-0 with two goals in a span of 56 seconds—her seventh and eighth goals of the season—off assists from junior midfielder Alex Gastulo (Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley) and  Tanya Groszew at 30:16 and 31:12, respectively.

Freshman reserve forward Karen Johnson (Nutley, NJ/Nutley HS) added a goal at 36:11—her fourth of the season—for the 4-0 halftime cushion.

Junior defender Jen Sanker (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford) concluded the scoring with her first goal of the season just 2:40 into the second period.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) made five saves to register her sixth shutout of the season and the school record 14th of her career for the Raiders.  All six Rutgers-Newark wins have come via shutout.

In defeat for NJCU, junior goalkeeper ALEXIS CHISARI (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) made six saves for the Gothic Knights, facing 21 shots.

Newark outshot NJCU 21-9 overall, including 15-5 in the first half. The Raiders were whistled for eight offsides.

Junior midfielder KATIE FEEHAN (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) and freshmen ELIANA TINEO (South Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) and MARIA ALCIVAR (West New York, NJ/Memorial) each put both of their shots on goal as NJCU forced Hastings to stop six of its nine total shots.

NJCU will return to action on Saturday, October 14 at 1 p.m. with a home NJAC contest against Montclair State University.
