TIFFANY BOYD TIES CAREER SHOT BLOCKING RECORD
NEW YORK, NY…Junior forward
ARNESE GOODMAN (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) registered a career-high 23 points, but John Jay College received 17 points and 17 rebounds from senior forward
Melissa Escalera (Bronx, NY/Adali E. Stevenson) and 16 points and 16 boards from senior forward
Lashannen Hogue (Yonkers, NY/Roosevelt), as the Bloodhounds overcame NJCU late in the second half, 65-56, in a non-conference game played Monday night at the Dog Pound.
In defeat, junior forward
TIFFANY BOYD (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) grabbed a share of NJCU’s career shot blocking record, as she rejected three blocks to give her 117 in her career. She is now even with the record originally achieved by
Alexis Nelson (1995-98).
With the loss, NJCU (1-2) drops its second straight game and has its seven-game winning streak against John Jay dating back to December 1979 snapped. NJCU still leads the all-time series, 7-3. It was the first meeting between NJCU and John Jay (2-2) since November 21, 1997.
Escalera finished with 17 points (4-12 FG), thanks to 9-of-14 shooting from the line, and grabbed 17 rebounds with five blocks and three assists. She did not commit a foul in 36 minutes of action.
Hogue shot 8-of-22 for 16 points, and had nine of her 16 caroms on the offensive glass. Senior guard Nasira Johnson (Newark, NJ/West Side) had 12 points (4-7 FG) and six assists, despite committing seven turnovers. JJC also received nine points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals from junior forward Michelle Wallace (Flushing, NY/Robert F. Kennedy).
Goodman shot 9-of-18 from the field for NJCU, finishing with 23 points, to surpass her previous high of 22 achieved twice against Rowan University during the 2005-06 campaign. She added five rebounds and two blocks.
Sophomore center
KELLY WILSON (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson County Prep) scored 12 points, and added six rebounds, five steals, three blocks and three assists.
Boyd added seven rebounds, six points and three blocks. Senior point guard
LATRESE McNAIR (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) scored six points—only the ninth time in her last 35 games she has failed to reach double figures.
John Jay led the entire first half, turning a 6-4 game into an 11-point, 19-8 margin. A 10-2 run helped NJCU whittle the deficit to three (21-18), before heading to the half down 32-30.
There were five ties and two lead changes in the second half. The Knights took their first lead at 35-34 with 17:48 remaining on a lay-up and free throw by Wilson, and extended the lead to three, 37-34, on a Goodman offensive board and putback. John Jay eventually regained the lead before a pair of Wilson free throws tied the game at 44-44.
But the Bloodhounds put together a 7-0 run to move in front 51-44, and extended the spurt to 11-2 for a 55-46 margin. Sparked by the aggressive play of freshman reserve guard
MICHELLE VASQUEZ (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) who had two steals and two assists in six minutes, the Knights battled back and closed to within one, 55-54 on a
Goodman jumper with 4:24 remaining.
However, as it did in a loss to Brockport State in its last action eight days earlier, NJCU again had difficulty scoring late, and John Jay tallied 10 of the final 12 points of the game. Three free throws put John Jay ahead 58-54 before a jumper by Hogue and two Johnson free throws made it 62-56, as the Bloodhounds prevailed by nine.
NJCU will return to action on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. with a non-conference road game against Briarcliffe College in Bethpage, NY.
