CAMDEN, NJ…After three days of rain forced several postponements and with the doubleheader moved from Jersey City to Rutgers University-Camden’s Campbell Field, the Scarlet Raptors collected 24 hits in two games, including a pair of homeruns by junior left fielder Mike Morris (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference twinbill from New Jersey City University, 12-1 and 13-3, late Monday.

With the pair of losses, NJCU falls to 15-21 and 2-12 in the NJAC. Camden (21-12, 8-6 NJAC) moved back into a tie for fourth place in the conference with 16 points. Both games were halted after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

In defeat, sophomore third baseman RUBEN BORGES (Union, NJ/Union) was 3-for-6 in the doubleheader to increase his two-year hit total to 91. NJCU sophomore centerfielder ROB SUMNER (Union, NJ/Union) had one hit, the 97th of his career, leaving him three shy of becoming the 25th member of the 100-hit club.

Camden broke open a 1-0 game in the second inning, by scoring seven runs on only three hits, as 11 batters came to the plate and took advantage of three NJCU errors in the frame. Leading by eight runs the Raptors scored three times on four hits in the seventh to close out the game.

Four Raptors had multiple hits in the contest, led by senior first baseman Matt Calloway (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional), who was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and one run. Senior shortstop Brian Jakubowski (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, while sophomore second baseman Joe Ambrozy (Haddon Township, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) had two RBIs and two runs in a 2-for-4 showing. Morris was 2-for-4 with two runs, and led off the seventh with a homer to right.

NJCU, the home team in the contest, scored its only run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Sumner. That was the only offense NJCU could muster, with two hits in the game.

Camden received a brilliant pitching performance from sophomore Andrew Lihotz (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast), who improved to 3-5 overall. In 5.0 innings, he allowed one run and scattered two singles, with six strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Pat Faulls (Laurel Springs, NJ/Highland Regional) closed the game with two no-hit innings of relief, fanning and walking two.

Sophomore left-hander GEORGE JESSEN (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) took the loss (0-5), allowing four earned runs (eight total) and five hits, with two walks in 1.1 innings. Sophomore MICHAEL McCORMICK (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) pitched the final 5.2 innings in relief, allowing four runs and five hits.

In game two, Camden scored four times in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead, before NJCU closed the gap with three runs in the bottom of the frame for a 4-3 score. However, the Raptors scored five times in the fifth and a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, to enforce the 10-run rule.

Morris and Calloway each drove in three RBIs in 2-for-5 batting efforts, while combining to score three runs. Morris blasted his fourth homer of the season and second of the day, in the seventh inning, to give the Raptors a 10-run margin. Sophomore rightfielder Joe Midili (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) went 3-for-4 with two runs, and senior catcher Nick Turekian (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, including a two-run homer in the third inning.

In a game in which Camden had five players with multiple hits, senior third baseman Tyler Inkster (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) was 2-for-3, including the 100th hit of his career. Ambrozy and junior centerfielder Nathan Buchter (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) each scored two runs.

Sumner, who had three RBIs in the doubleheader, was 1-for-3 with a two-run single in the third inning. Borges was 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the third. NJCU had seven hits in the game.

Junior righty Greg Galbraith (Westville, NJ/Gateway Regional) earned the win for Camden (2-0), allowing three runs and six hits with three strikeouts and no walks in 6.0 innings. Sophomore righty MARCUS WIGGINS (Jersey City, NJ/Liberty) took the loss (2-4). In 4.1 innings, he allowed eight runs and eight hits with four strikeouts and five walks.

NJCU returns to action on Thursday, April 27 at 3:30 p.m. in a home conference game against Montclair State University at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
