UNION, NJ…New Jersey City University’s final road game of the 2006 baseball season provided plenty of individual historical notes, but resulted in a loss for the Gothic Knights. Kean University sophomore right-hander Thomas Paglione (Hamilton, NJ) allowed just four hits and one run in seven innings of work, and junior first baseman Aaron Richard (Plainfield, NJ) finished a homer shy of the cycle as the Cougars scored at least one run in every inning and defeated NJCU, 14-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game at Jim Hynes Stadium. The Cougars had 12 hits and walked 12 times in the game.

Kean (26-12, 10-6 NJAC) continued its hot play by winning its sixth in a row, to remain in at least third place in the NJAC standings entering the final weekend of the regular season. The loss for is the fifth straight for the Gothic Knights (15-23, 2-14).

In defeat, several career and single-season milestones were attained by five NJCU players, led by sophomore centerfielder #ROB SUMNER# (Union, NJ/Union), who was 2-for-5 with three stolen bases and one run.

With the two hits, he now has 99 in his two-year career, including 55 this season, and needs just one more with two games remaining to become the 25th member of the 100-hit club. His run was the 90th of his career and 44th of the season. The 44 runs are the second most in single-season history, and two shy of matching his own record of 46 last year. He is now tied for eighth in school history in runs.

Additionally, Sumner, the Division III national leader in total stolen bases this year, extended his own single-season steals record to 39, while also swiping the 53rd of his career, to climb into fifth place in school history. He has 83 total bases this year, also good for fifth on the single-season charts, while his 55 hits are eighth best for one year.

The previous record was 37 by five players. Sumner, Caravano, junior first baseman JAVAN CAMACHO (Jersey City, NJ/Ferris), and sophomore third baseman RUBEN BORGES (Union, NJ/Union) all played in their 38th games of the season, tying the single-season mark set by Dave Long in 1988.

Despite the numerous historical achievements on Friday, it was Kean that took the victory.

The Gothic Knights took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Camacho singled home Sumner, who led off the game with a single. However, that lead was short lived as the Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the inning and took the lead for good in the second inning for a 2-1 advantage. Kean added two runs in the third and three in the fourth for a 7-1 margin. Kean went ahead 14-1, before sophomore rightfielder ANTHONY MACKOW (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), who was 2-for-3 in the game, scored an unearned run in the ninth inning.

For the second straight game, Kean had all 18 position players see action with eight recording at least one hit. Overall, 11 Kean players scored and nine different Cougars picked up at least one RBI.

Overall, Richard went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Junior shortstop Perry Schatzow (Ocean, NJ) was 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs and freshman rightfielder Keith Kwiatek (Raritan, NJ) came off the bench to pick up two hits (2-2) and one run. Sophomore leftfielder Eric Ammirata (Hamilton, NJ) and freshman designated hitter Mike Shymanski (Edison, NJ) were each 1-for-2 with two runs.

Paglione improved to 4-1 on the year. In 7.0 innings on the mound, he allowed one run, scattered four singles, walked two and fanned one. Junior Mike McCormack (Staten Island, NY) pitched a scoreless eighth, and freshman righty, Kyle Murphy (East Hanover, NJ) gave up one unearned run in the ninth to close out the game.

After opening the year at 4-2, sophomore righty AHSON SHAHID (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) suffered the loss to even his ledger at 4-4. He allowed six earned runs (eight total) and seven walks with one strikeout in 4.0 innings, but only allowed four hits. Freshman right-hander JORDAN LOVELL (Fredericksburg, VA/Stafford) allowed four runs on three hits with three walks in 1.1 innings of relief, before sophomore righty MICHAEL McCORMICK (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick), who started in leftfield, tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing one earned run and five hits, with three Ks and two walks.

NJCU will conclude the 2006 season on Saturday, April 29 at 12 pm with a home NJAC doubleheader against #20 ranked Rowan University at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
