PURCHASE, NY…Manhattanville College broke open a 1-0 game with four goals in a 7:06 stretch of the early second half as the hosts defeated New Jersey City University, 6-0, in the opening round of the 2006 Valiant Cup. It was the season opener for both schools and the debut of ROBERT BIELAN as NJCU’s new head coach.

It was the third meeting between the schools all-time but the first since October 15, 1994. The Valiants now lead the all-time series, 2-1. Every game in the series has resulted in a shutout for the winner.
Senior Sarah Kinsley (Pearl River, NY) and freshmen Cybil Robinson (South Lake Tahoe, CA) and Bailey Flood (South Lake Tahoe, CA) each contributed a goal and an assist.

Junior keeper KASANDRA ZIENIUK (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) stopped seven shots in defeat. The Valiants made three saves in split keeper action to record the shutout.

In a sloppy game played under heavy rain and wind from the remnants of Tropical Depression Ernesto, neither team found the net until the 40th minute when Kinsley put away a rebound of a loose ball shot off the post by freshman Mariko Morimoto (Brookline, MA). The Valiants took a 1-0 lead into the half.

M-Ville made it 2-0 at 50:57 when a failed defensive clear was stolen by senior Erica Cisek (Islip, NY) and knocked in from outside the box.

Leading 2-0, the Valiants added three goals in a stretch of 1:26. Freshman Morgan Burns (Cambridge, NY) scored off an assist from Robinson at 56:37. Robinson made it 4-0 just 50 seconds later when she came in on a breakaway at 57:27. A Kinsley shot was saved by NJCU at 58:03, but Flood secured the rebound and made it 5-0 at 58:03. Freshman Amanda Perez (Staten Island, NY) netted the final goal for M-Ville at 82:58 off a double assist.

NJCU will face Eastern Connecticut State University at Sunday, September 3 at 12 p.m. in the tournament’s consolation game. It will be the first ever meeting between the schools. The Warriors fell to New York University in Saturday’s other game in the Valiant Cup, 2-0.
