GOTHICS KNIGHTS RECEIVE FIRST-EVER NO. 1 VOTE
DOVER, DE…The
New Jersey City University women’s bowling continues to ascend in the national rankings, and in the process, have achieved another first in the history of the Gothic Knight athletics program. NJCU has climbed one spot to No. 4 nationally among all schools in Division I, II, and III in the third of six monthly national polls, released on January 10 by the
National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA). Furthermore, for the first time on record in the history of NJCU athletics, the Gothic Knights have earned a No. 1 vote in a national poll.
The Gothic Knights (34-9) were ranked No. 5 in the December 2006 poll, but based on the strength of their tournament championship on December 29 at the FDU Holiday Jamboree, including wins over then No. 1 ranked Fairleigh Dickinson University in the semifinals and No. 6 University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the finals, moved up one spot.
The 416 total points received in the latest poll is also a school record. NJCU was ranked sixth in the preseason poll on October 28, with 206 total points and received 295 points in the December poll
—an increase in support of 41 percent.
The last time NJCU was ranked as high as fourth in the country was just last year. NJCU finished the 2005-06 season ranked No. 4 nationally—the position they held in every poll during that year.
In the three-year history of the NTCA poll, NJCU has now been ranked sixth or higher in all eight national polls, with an all-time high of No. 2 in 2004-05.
NJCU is currently in second place in the North East Women’s Collegiate Bowling Conference to defending national champion and intrastate rival FDU.
The top three in the national rankings remained unchanged. FDU (37-8, 491 points) is No. 1 in the poll for the third consecutive month, receiving nine of 17 first place votes, down from 10 in December.
Vanderbilt University (28-4, 483 points) is No. 2 for a second straight poll, but inched closer towards the top spot with seven first-place votes, after scoring five last month, and sits just eight points behind the Knights. The University of Nebraska (27-7, 458 points) is third with two first place votes. At No. 4, NJCU received the only remaining No. 1 vote.
UMES (47-9, 373 points) also climbed one spot to fifth in the nation, while University of Central Missouri (21-6-1, 332 points), dropped from fourth to sixth. Rounding out the Top 10 are Alabama A&M University (19-9, 289 points), Sacred Heart University (24-9, 254 points), Texas Southern University (32-11, 222 points), and Minnesota State University-Mankato (20-14, 164 points).
