LIZZELLE CINTRON MOVES INTO EIGHTH PLACE IN KILLS IN NCAA HISTORY

UNION, NJ…In the 750th match played in the 25-year history of the Gothic Knight women’s volleyball program, pre-season league favorite New Jersey City University remained perfect in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, sweeping an NJAC match from Kean University, 3-0 (30-11, 30-23, 30-8), late Thursday at Harwood Arena.

With the win, NJCU improves to 21-4 overall and 6-0 in the NJAC, while winning its ninth consecutive match. The 21-4 mark represents the best record after 25 matches in school history. NJCU had started the 1997, 2004, 2005, and 2006 seasons at 20-5. The Knights are 13-0 this year in matches that last three games.

The Cougars fall to 6-14 and 2-5 NJAC with the loss. Kean leads the all-time series, 27-5, but NJCU has won four of the last five meetings between the clubs.

Overall, NJCU landed 20 service aces—the third time this year the Knights have had at least 20 aces in a match.

In two games, Cintron, the Division III national leader in kills per game and total kills, posted eight kills (8-1-14), a .500 hitting percentage, four digs and three blocks. Junior opposite SARAH TORRES (Elizabeth, NJ/Science) finished with seven kills (7-4-18) and three blocks.

Freshman setter ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) dished 11 assists in 13 sets, with seven digs and two aces. Senior libero GLORINELL PEREZ (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) had seven aces for NJCU, and defended six digs to increase her all-time program standard to 1,972. Sophomore middle blocker JENNIFER HATCH (Paterson, NJ/Mary Help of Christians Academy) tallied five kills.

Also for NJCU, freshman defensive specialist THERESA CARVALHO (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) and sophomore outside hitter KAREN RAMIREZ (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) each had three aces, while sophomore outside hitter MICHELLE CINTRON (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) and junior defensive specialist LYANELLY NEGRON (Union, NJ/Union) each landed two aces. Senior setter #NADIA DaSILVA DUCOS# (Newark, NJ/Science) supplied seven assists in eight tries.

Kean hit negative in every game, finishing with 12 kills and 26 errors in 86 attempts for a -.163 percentage. Freshman Nicole Bolash (Clinton, NJ/Voorhees) had a match-high 11 digs and added three aces.

NJCU returns to action on Saturday, October 13 when it hosts the 14th annual Gothic Knight Invitational, with matches against William Paterson University, Lehman College, York College (NY) and FDU-Florham. NJCU will be seeking its fourth consecutive GKI title.
