GRIFFITHS, WASHINGTON CLOSE IN ON MILESTONES AS NJCU SWEEPS CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK

NEW YORK, NY…Senior setter MAURICE WASHINGTON (Orlando, FL/Edgewater (FL) delivered 41 assists, seven digs and three aces and senior opposite ROBERT GRIFFITHS (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) added eight kills, eight digs and three blocks, as the two captains crept closer to major career milestones, in New Jersey City University’s 3-0 sweep (30-19, 30-17, 30-23) of City College of New York, Thursday night at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.
 
With the win, NJCU improves to 5-3 overall and extends its lead in the all-time series to 15-5. CCNY is 0-5 overall and has now last seven consecutive matches since last year.
 
Washington, with the 41 assists, now has 3,833 career assists in 355 games. He needs 72 more to pass Arvin Rada (1995-97), who amassed 3,904 assists in 379 career games.
 
Griffiths upped his career kills total to 989, needing 11 more to become the fourth member of NJCU’s men’s 1,000-kill club. He hit .429 overall in the win (8-2-14).
 
Sophomore outside hitter KEVIN RODGERS (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) continued to lead NJCU offensively, as he provided 13 kills (13-5-22) and a .364 percentage, and sophomore outside hitter THIAGO SIQUEIRA (Newark, NJ/Science) chalked up his fifth career double-double—all coming this season—as he bagged 12 kills (12-8-25) and a team-high 13 digs.
Freshman middle hitter JOSE SILVA (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) had seven kills in eight attacks (7-1-8) for a .750 percentage, and added three block assists. Freshman middle hitter DANIEL CRESPO (Paterson, NJ/Clifton) chipped in five kills, six digs, two blocks and two aces.
 
On Saturday, February 10, NJCU will compete in a tri-match in Langhorne, PA, when it meets Villa Julie College in a neutral site match at 1 p.m., followed by a road contest against Philadelphia Biblical University at 3 p.m. On Sunday, February 11, NJCU will visit Yeshiva University in New York, NY for a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.
