DELUCREZIA, TROGDON PITCH NJCU TO DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF JOHN JAY, 4-2 AND 7-0

- NJCU swept its second straight doubleheader as Andrea Delucrezia's 10 strikeouts shutdown the Bloodhounds.

JERSEY CITY, NJ…Sophomore right-hander ANDREA DELUCREZIA (Belleville, NJ/St. Mary’s-Rutherford) struck out a career-high 10 batters in a game for the third time this season, and freshman right-hander REANNON TROGDON (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Regional) tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout as New Jersey City University swept a non-conference doubleheader from John Jay College, 4-2 and 7-0, on a frigid afternoon at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
 
The wins for NJCU are its fourth consecutive triumphs as the Knights improve to 8-14 overall. John Jay (3-15) has lost seven in a row. NJCU leads the all-time series, 23-3, and has won 19 of the last 20 meetings.
 
NJCU freshman third baseman CHRISTEN HALL (East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Regional) was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI in each game.
 
***********************GAME 1: NJCU 4, John Jay 2***********************
In game one, Delucrezia struck out 10 batters in seven innings, and walked five, allowing just one earned run (two total) and four hits over seven innings, to improve to 4-7.
 
<dfn><a href=CHRISTEN HALL" src="/images/softball/2007/4/6/03-26-07%20Christen%20Hall%2013.JPG" width=150 align=left border=0>Hall was the lone player for either team with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Freshman leftfielder TARA PERRUCCI (Wallington, NJ/Wallington) walked three times and was 1-for-1 with a triple and one run.
 
A triple by freshman shortstop Danielle Bonici (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s Girls) gave the Bloodhounds a 1-0 lead in the top of the third before NJCU countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to gather a 4-1 lead.
 
In the third, Perrucci led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Hall. Trogdon followed with a walk, before she and Hall swiped second and third. Freshman centerfielder CHRISTINA PROSPERO (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) singled home Hall with the eventual winning run before a sacrifice fly by Delucrezia drove in Trogdon for a 3-1 edge. An RBI single by junior catcher VANESSA NICOLICH (Cliffside Park, NJ/St. Mary’s-Rutherford) extended the lead to 4-1.
 
John Jay got one run back in the fifth when NJCU committed three errors. Sophomore pitcher Erica Esposito (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) took the loss (1-8), allowing four runs and sixth hits with three walks and one strikeout in 3.0 innings.
 
***********************GAME 2: NJCU 7, John Jay 0***********************
In the nightcap, Trogdon struck out six and walked three, allowing only four singles. She stranded 11 Bloodhounds over the course of the game to earn the win (4-7).
 
Hall was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI and freshman second baseman LACEY SKOWRONSKI (Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) drove in two RBIs and scored twice in a 1-for-3 showing. Perrucci also had a triple in the second game, finishing 1-for-3.
 
NJCU scored two runs in the second, third and fourth innings to open a 6-0 lead, before tacking on a final tally in the fifth.
 
Skowronski gave NJCU all the offense it would need in the second inning when she collected an RBI double to score Nicolich who had also doubled, before coming around to score on an error.
 
After Perrucci tripled to lead off the third, Hall singled for a 3-0 lead. A double by Prospero brought home Hall for a 4-0 cushion. Senior rightfielder VANESSA SOLARES (Palisades Park, NJ/Palisades Park) had an RBI double in the fourth and junior shortstop SUSIE MATSUTANI (Gallup, NM/Gallup) followed with an RBI groundout. NJCU’s last run was generated on a walk, two groundouts and a wild pitch.
 
No John Jay players had multiple hits in the loss. Freshman pitcher Dayna Navatta (Queens, NY/Bayside), who also tossed the final three innings of game one, suffered the loss (2-6) in game two. In six innings, she allowed five earned runs (seven total) and nine hits, walking three.
 
NJCU is back in action on Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. when it visits Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader in Glassboro, NJ. John Jay plays at York College (NY) on April 10.
