JERSEY CITY, NJ…New Jersey City University freshman striker JENNIFER ALBUJA (Union City, NJ/Hoboken) scored her 10th goal of the season in the ninth minute, but William Paterson University responded with two goals from junior forward Amanda Kurdyla (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) and a goal and an assist from junior forward Samantha Flynn (Lindenwold, NJ/Lindenwold) and defeated NJCU, 4-1, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both schools, played at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.

WPU (4-1-0, 1-0-0 NJAC) has won three consecutive games—all by identical 4-1 margins—and the Pioneers have scored exactly four goals in all four of its victories. NJCU (3-2-0, 0-1-0 NJAC) lost for the first time this year when scoring first. WPU leads the all-time series, 12-0. The Pioneers outshot NJCU, 33-8, including 16-4 on goal.

Albuja kept scoring at a record pace for NJCU, notching her 10th goal in only her fifth game of her career. Her goal at 8:52 of the opening period was set up by a thru ball by graduate student midfielder KATIE FEEHAN (Manasquan, NJ/Wall), allowing Albuja to go one-on-one with the opposing keeper, before scoring using a nifty finishing move. The assist was the 76th point of Feehan’s career—one shy of matching Carine Carvalheiro’s career school record.

Albuja’s 10 goals are tied for fourth in single-season history and has 13 games remaining to approach the record of 14. Meanwhile, she is already tied for ninth in NJCU history in career goals.
But WPU would counter midway through the first half with two goals in a span of 1:53. Flynn scored her first goal of the season at 29:20 when she encountered a loose ball inside the box and knocked in the game-tying tally from six yards out.

Moments later, Kurdyla put the Pioneers in front to stay when she stole a ball and drove to the goal at 31:13 for her seventh score of the season and a 2-1 lead, which stood up at halftime.

The game remained an evenly played contest until the 73rd minute, when freshman forward Drea Wagoner (Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley) received a short cross from Kurdyla from the left of the box and scored at 72:56. It was Kurdyla’s first assist of the season.

Kurdyla capped the scoring at 82:47 with her eighth goal and 17th point of the year, when Flynn slid a pass on the left side, and drove a shot into the upper left portion of the net. The assist was Flynn’s first of the season.

In defeat, NJCU freshman goalkeeper KELLY REILLY (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) made a career-high 12 saves. WPU sophomore keeper Meaghan Baker (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) had three saves.

NJCU is back in action on Wednesday, September 19 at 4:30 p.m. when it visits Mahwah, NJ for an NJAC game against Ramapo College. WPU hosts NJAC rival Montclair State University that evening at 7 p.m.
