POMONA, NJ…In a match-up of two teams entering 5-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings, Richard Stockton College jumped out to a 32-12 lead and handed New Jersey City University its most lopsided loss in 14 years, as the Ospreys defeated NJCU, 101-60, in an NJAC inter-divisional game at the Stockton Sports Center.
Stockton (13-4, 6-1 NJAC) has won five consecutive games and six of its last seven, while NJCU falls to 12-6 and 5-2 NJAC. NJCU still leads the all-time series, 39-27.
For NJCU, it was only the sixth time in the 75-year history of the program that the Gothic Knights have lost a game by 40 or more and was the most lopsided setback since a 109-64 decision at Rowan College (now University) on January 25, 1994. Overall, it tied for the fourth largest margin of defeat in NJCU history and was the most lopsided loss ever to long-time rival Stockton.
Overall, it marked only the 23rd time in school history an opponent has scored 100 against NJCU; the Knights are 5-18 in those games. Stockton has scored 100 twice in the series; the only other occasion was a 124-102 NJCU win in Pomona on January 12, 1985.
Stockton was led by senior forward Jon Greene (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) who became the 24th member of the 1,000 point club for RSC, notching 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting and 6-of-8 free throws, with six rebounds, three steals and two blocks in 21 minutes. Junior forward Jerome Hubbard (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) matched him with a game-high 20 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the field—all from three-point range— with four steals in 25 minutes.
The Ospreys also received 15 points (6-6 FG), six rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes from freshman guard Kai Massaquoi (Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights), and 13 points (6-10 FG) and six boards (five offensive) from sophomore forward Kevin Brown (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) in 10 reserve minutes. Junior forward Chad Davis (Millville, NJ/Sacred Heart) added nine points and three assists in 17 minutes.
The Lancioni brothers, senior guard Mario Lancioni (Runnemede, NJ/Triton) and sophomore guard Santini Lancioni (Runnemede, NJ/Paul VI) each scored eight points, and combined for nine assists.
Junior All-America guard
DANA JOHN (Hillside, NJ/Pocono Mountain East (Pa.)), who had not practiced in the two days leading up to the game due to an ankle injury, scored just four points on seven shots—the third lowest scoring effort of his career. NJCU’s starting line-up accounted for only 18 points and had 13 turnovers.
Sophomore forward
DIVINE LYLES (Watchung, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) had a team-high nine points (6-6 FT) in nine reserve minutes. It is the first time NJCU has not had a player in double figures since a 68-59 win over Farmingdale State on December 15, 2005.
Also for NJCU, senior swingman
AARON DESIR (Hillside, NJ/Hillside) had seven points (4-4 FT) in nine minutes while sophomore point guard
PAT DEVANEY (Bayonne, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), a transfer from Stockton, had a career best seven points in 10 minutes.
Leading 11-7 early, Stockton exploded for a 21-5 run to gain a 32-12, 20-point margin and never looked back. It was 40-22 with 6:47 remaining in the first half, before RSC unleashed a 17-2 streak to pull ahead by 33, 57-24, with 52 seconds left in the period. Stockton led at halftime by 34 (60-26). The Ospreys led by as many as 50 points on two occasions in the second half, as recently as 92-42 with 8:29 remaining. NJCU only had 37 points with 11:06 left, before its reserves scored 23 points in the final portion of the game.
NJCU committed 29 turnovers in the game, including 19 in the first half—without a steal in the period. Stockton, which shot 60.6 percent in the first half (20-33) and was 8-of-14 from three-point range (.571), finished at 53.0 percent overall and made 11 total three-pointers.
NJCU returns to action on Monday, January 28 when it visits New York City College of Technology in a non-conference game in Brooklyn, NY.
