New Jersey City University 10-0 in the first half to gain a 2-0 lead, before putting the game out of reach with two more goals in a span of 1:04 in the second half, as the Pioneers defeated the Gothic Knights, 5-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Wednesday at Pioneer Park.
WPU, which outshot NJCU 27-1 overall, improves to 10-1-1 and 4-1-1 in the NJAC. NJCU falls to .500 overall (7-7, 0-6 NJAC). WPU leads the series, 13-0.
Five different players scored goals for WPU, led by sophomore midfielder Ali Ruddy (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and senior forward Amanda Kurdyla (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) who each scored once and added the only two assists of the game.
Freshman forward Sophie Hart-Ruderman (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia), sophomore midfielder Drea Wagoner (Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley) and senior defender Dana Bertoli (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) accounted for the other three goals.

Hart-Ruderman scored the eventual game-winning goal just 2:35 into the game when a chip pass from Ruddy led to a breakaway. It was her third goal of the year. Eight minutes later, Ruddy scored herself when at 10:39 she spun to the right before firing in her second goal of the year. WPU led 2-0 at the break.
WPU began to put the game away when Wagoner added her first goal of the year at 63:29, scoring inside the right post off a cross from Kurdyla. Moments later, Kurdyla, who is now second in the conference in goals behind Albuja (22), scored her 15th when she knocked a shot into an empty net at 64:33. Bertoli came off the bench to tally the final goal at 89:05 when she ran onto a cross and finished in the right side of the net for her first score of the season.
The road doesn't get any easier in the challenging NJAC for the Gothic Knights. They will return to action on Saturday, October 18 at 7 p.m. with a road game against #14 nationally ranked Rowan University, the #3 team in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
