JERSEY CITY, NJ…New Jersey City University
celebrated Senior Night 2008 by closing out the New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule with a 3-0 victory over Rutgers University-Camden, 25-9, 25-16, 25-13, on Tuesday night at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

NJCU improves to 14-9 overall and 5-3 in the NJAC, finishing tied for fourth in the conference standings. Due to a loss at Rowan University on October 16, the Gothic Knights will be the No. 5 seed in the NJAC Tournament when it opens on November 4, and the Knights will make a return trip to Glassboro, NJ to face Rowan. Camden falls to 8-13 overall and 1-6 NJAC. NJCU is 15-0 all-time against the Scarlet Raptors and have swept every match.

Between the first and second set, NJCU honored its five seniors, outside hitter JENNIFER CARVALHO (Rahway, NJ/Rahway), middle blocker JENNIFER HATCH (Paterson, NJ/Mary Help of Christians Academy), outside hitter JACQUELINE LeBLANC (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), libero LYANELLY NEGRON (Union, NJ/Union), and middle blocker SARAH TORRES (Elizabeth, NJ/Science). LeBlanc, Negron and Torres are four-year seniors and NJCU has posted a 101-31 record overall and 27-5 in the league during that time. Hatch is a graduating junior.

NJCU was led by LeBlanc, who had a match-high with 10 kills, hit .240 (10-4-25), six digs and two aces. Torres added seven kills and two solo blocks.

NJCU sophomore setter #ALEX JOHANESEN# (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) delivered 25 assists and four of NJCU's 15 service aces. It was her 11th match this year with three or more aces and the 10th time the Knights have floored double digits in aces as a team. Freshman defensive specialist KIARA MARTINEZ (Newark, NJ/East Side) contributed a match-high five aces.

Hatch
and Carvalho each had four kills, while Carvalho added six digs and two aces. Negron collected seven digs.

Camden was limited to a -.068 hitting percentage with just 16 kills. Half of that total came from freshman middle hitter Katherine Crosby (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) who had eight kills, 12 digs and two solo blocks. Sophomore setter Krista White (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hill West) finished with 12 assists and nine digs.

NJCU held a 16-5 lead in the opening set and 20-8 in the third frame, cruising to victory in each. Camden did come within one point in the second set, trailing 17-16, before NJCU scored the final eight points.

NJCU will conclude the 2008 regular season on Wednesday, October 22 at 7 p.m. when it visits Haverford College in Haverford, PA for a non-conference match. The Fords were ranked as high as 18th nationally a few weeks ago. Camden next plays on October 28 in an NJAC home match against Ramapo College.
