'AUTHORIZED' GAME PROGRAM
JERSEY CITY, NJ…Rutgers University-Camden sophomore midfielder
Christina Vitagliano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) tapped in an uncontested goal off a cross from junior forward
Tina Mascia (Deptford, NJ/Washington Township) at 94:18 of the first overtime period as the Scarlet Raptors outlasted
New Jersey City University, 1-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field. The game was played under extremely gusty winds and a steady rain.
Camden improved to 8-10-1 overall and 2-6 in the league while the Gothic Knights dropped to 8-9 (0-8 NJAC). The Raptors lead the all-time series, 9-0. It was the second time this season NJCU has lost a conference game in the first overtime with both games played in the rain. NJCU fell to 2-9-6 all-time in overtime games.
Camden, which outshot NJCU, 15-3, including 9-2 in the second half, won the game despite playing 10-on-11 for the final 11:31 of regulation and all of overtime after a straight red card was issued to the Raptors' midfielder at 78:29.
After NJCU could not convert on its first shot of overtime,
Mascia sent a cross on the ground across the box from the left wing. With no defenders in place to breakup the scoring chance, NJCU sophomore goalkeeper
KELLY REILLY (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) tried to cut off the feed. But when she was unable to make the play, that left
Vitagliano alone in the box, where she knocked in a wide open shot from eight yards away. It was her second goal of the year and the fourth assist for
Mascia.
Reilly, who finished with six saves, made at the time a gave-saving smother of a shot at 84:32 by freshman midfielder Samantha Sharp (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Heights).
NJCU's best scoring chance came at 60:40 when a hard shot from sophomore striker
JENNIFER ALBUJA (Union City, NJ/Hoboken) was stopped by Camden senior keeper
Jayme Gatti (Delran, NJ/Delran), who subbed in at halftime and earned the win, making one save in 49:18. Junior
Natalie Browne (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) did not make a stop in the first 45:00.
NJCU is back in action on Wednesday, October 29 at 3:30 p.m. when it hosts Montclair State University in an NJAC game while Camden hosts Rowan University that evening at 6 p.m.
