TOURNAMENT BRACKET
PITMAN, NJ… New Jersey City University has claimed the fifth seed in the 2008 New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament, the conference office announced on Tuesday night. The Gothic Knights (14-10, 5-3 NJAC) will open the 2008 NJAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday, November 4 at 7 p.m. with a road contest at fourth-seeded Rowan University (13-16, 5-3 NJAC) in Glassboro, NJ.
NJCU has reached the conference finals in each of the past three seasons, winning the 2005 NJAC championship. Current seniors #
JACQUELINE LeBLANC# (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), LYANELLY NEGRON (Union, NJ/Union) and SARAH TORRES (Elizabeth, NJ/Science) were all freshmen that season. During their careers, NJCU has played in the conference finals in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
However, the Knights were no lower than the second seed in the six-tournament in each of those years and did not need to play a quarterfinal match.
NJCU, dropped a 3-1 decision to Rowan (25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 27-29) on October 16, and the Profs are 20-3 all-time in the series. Had NJCU won that contest, it would have finished the year 6-2 in the league and would have claimed the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinals.
Instead, the winner of the NJCU/Rowan match will face top-seeded Richard Stockton College (25-8, 8-0 NJAC) in the semifinals on Thursday, November 6 at 7 p.m.
The other quarterfinal will feature third-seeded Ramapo College (15-13, 6-2 NJAC) hosting sixth-seeded William Paterson University (19-7, 3-5 NJAC) with the winner traveling to Montclair State University (16-12, 6-2 NJAC) for the other semifinal.
The championship match will be played at the site of the highest remaining seed on Saturday, November 8. The league champion gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The 2008 tournament will mark NJCU's 15th appearance since 1986 (1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008). NJCU is 6-18 all-time in 24 NJAC Tournament matches.
Ticket prices for all tournament matches are $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for seniors, children and students.
