BOX SCORE
MADISON, NJ…New Jersey City University trailed by only one at halftime after sophomore striker
JENNIFER ALBUJA (Union City, NJ/Hoboken) scored her 21
st goal of the season, but Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham countered with a pair of tallies midway through the second half and despite a goal from freshman midfielder
NICOLE SARICA (Linden, NJ/Linden), defeated the
Gothic Knights, 4-2, in a non-conference game on Wednesday night at Shields Field.
It was the first meeting between NJCU and FDU in more than 10 years, with the schools last meeting on September 28, 1998. FDU, guided by former NJCU coach Kristin Spohn, improved to 6-7 overall with the win, while the Gothic Knights fell to 6-6 overall, with its sixth straight defeat. FDU leads the all-time series, 4-0.
FDU received a hat trick from freshman midfielder Kim Campfield (Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck), who scored the first three goals of her career, to stake the Devils to a 3-1 lead. Sophomore forward Brittany Kanickij (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) added her eighth goal of the year for FDU's fourth goal.
FDU had the ball bounce their way twice as it grabbed a 2-0 lead. After playing nearly 27 minutes of scoreless soccer, Campfield put the Devils ahead on a penalty kick at 26:40. At the 40:58 mark, sophomore forward Lora Fink (Hamilton Square, NJ/Pennington) had a shot strike the post, but Campfield was in the right place, gathering the rebound before knocking it in for a 2-0 cushion.
NJCU trimmed the deficit to 2-1 just 1:46 later as freshman midfielder
NICOLE DeMOTT (Rochelle Park, NJ/Hackensack) lifted a cross onto the foot of
Albuja, who slammed home her 45
th career goal and 96
th point for her 21
st goal in 12 games this year. The assist for
DeMott was her first career point.
It remained a one-goal game more than 12 minutes into the second half before
Campfield struck again, redirecting a corner kick from
Kanickij for a 3-1 lead at 57:22.
Kanickij increased the margin to 4-1 at 69:08 when she scored on a breakaway, dribbling around NJCU sophomore keeper
KELLY REILLY (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial), who attempted to cut off the play.
NJCU drew within 4-2 just 2:39 later when sophomore midfielder
JUANITA SARRIA (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) sent a cross to
Sarica along the endline, which she knocked in for her seventh goal of the season. But FDU, which outshot NJCU, 21-13, limited the Knights to one shot the remainder of the game.
In defeat, Reilly made five saves. Freshman keeper Lauren Albrecht (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) made one save for the Devils in the first half while freshman Melanie Pierson (Brookside, NJ/Mendham) had three stops in the second period.
NJCU will return to action on Saturday, October 11 at 11 a.m. when it hosts the City College of New York as part of a doubleheader at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
