FARMINGDALE, NY…
Farmingdale State College took advantage of 15 first half turnovers to take control of the contest and defeated New Jersey City University, 75-57, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.

Farmingdale improves to 4-3 with its fourth consecutive win while NJCU falls to 2-6. The Rams lead the all-time series, 6-2 and have won the last three meetings. NJCU, playing its first game since December 6, was short-handed, with only seven players dressing.

Farmingdale shot 10-of-25 from three-point distance in the game (.400), while NJCU made just 3-of-12.
Freshman point guard LASHAWN OVERTON (Jersey City, NJ/Snyder) and junior guard CAROLINA GARCIA (Plainfield, NJ/ Franklin) carried the offensive load for the Gothic Knights, combining to score 35 of NJCU's 57 total points.

Garcia
had 18 points (8-17 FG) with three assists while playing a full 40 minutes. Overton added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists in 39 minutes, but committed 10 turnovers.

Sophomore center ROBIN REYNOLDS (East Orange, NJ/University) had career highs in points and rebounds, finishing one point shy of a double-double. She posted a team-best 10 rebounds, adding nine points (4-7 FG). Freshman forward/center PATIENCE BROWN (Plainfield, NJ/Union County Vo. Tech) contributed nine points (4-6 FG) and seven rebounds in 37 minutes.

The Rams had four players in double figures to account for 62 of their 75 points. Freshman guard Shemique Hooks (Westbury, NY/Westbury) tallied 11 of her game-high 20 points in the first half, shooting 4-of-10 from three-point range, adding seven rebounds. Junior guard Kimberly Blakney (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Banneker) finished with 18 points (8-15 FG), seven steals, six rebounds and four assists.

Also for FSC, junior forward Gabrielle Green (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) had a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, with 10 points and nine rebounds in the first half alone. Sophomore guard Janel Monah (Westbury, NY/Westbury) collected all 10 of her points in the opening period. Junior guard Tiffara Steward (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) added eight points.

Down 5-4, FSC went on a 13-0 run to seize an 18-4 lead with 10:53 remaining. NJCU committed 14 of its 15 first half turnovers in the first 11 minutes of the game. The Rams also owned leads of 25-6 and 30-8. Better ball control allowed NJCU to claw back slowly as the Knights used a 10-0 run to cut it to 30-18. A three by Overton and Edrington jumper made it to 34-23. NJCU did not commit a foul until 2:56 remained in the first period. But Monah hit a three at the buzzer to increase the Rams' lead to 41-25.

A Garcia jumper kept NJCU within 12, 47-35 before Hooks canned a triple for a 15-point, 50-35 edge. Overton had an offensive rebound and putback and Garcia converted a free throw (50-38), but Hooks hit back-to-back threes for a 17-point, 56-39 edge and the Rams were not challenged from there, scoring 12 of the next 15 points.

NJCU limited FSC to only five free throws the entire game, but the Knights struggled themselves from the stripe, shooting 4-of-15 (.267). While NJCU only committed two more turnovers than the Rams, 24-22, FSC translated NJCU's giveaways into a 25-7 scoring advantage. Meanwhile, the Rams had a 55-41 rebounding edge, including 25-14 on the offensive glass, which gave the hosts 22 second-chance points. FSC had a 13-0 margin in bench scoring.

NJCU will depart for its California trip on December 18 and will meet Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday, December 20 at 12 p.m. Pacific Time in the opening game of the 2008 Caltech-Claremont Holiday Classic at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA.
