FARMINGDALE, NY…The non-perfect storm led to a game that the young
New Jersey City University men's basketball team would like to forget. Farmingdale State College, which led by nine at the half, outscored NJCU 64-29 in the second half and out-rebounded the Gothic Knights 56-30, including 23-7 on the offensive glass as the Rams handed NJCU a 104-60 non-conference loss on Tuesday night at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.
The lopsided loss snaps NJCU's two-game winning streak and ends the 2008 portion of the season schedule with a 3-4 mark. Farmingdale improves to 7-2 with its third straight win and seventh in eight games. NJCU still leads the all-time series, 7-2.
The 44-point margin marks only the seventh time in the 76-year history of the program, a span of more than 1600 games, that the Gothic Knights have lost a game by 40 or more points and represents the most lopsided non-conference loss in school history. The previous record was a 41-point loss to eventual national champion Calvin College in the NCAA Division III national semifinals, 81-40, on March 20, 1992. It was the most lopsided loss since a 45-point setback at then Rowan College, 109-64, on January 25, 1994. It was the fourth largest margin of defeat in program history. It also was only the 24th time in school history an opponent has scored 100 points.
Overall, Farmingdale owns a 27-3 advantage in second chance points and turned 25 NJCU giveaways into a 36-11 in points off turnovers. The Rams outscored NJCU's bench, 46-12.
Farmingdale led 40-31 at the half, owning a 32-14 rebounding margin, highlighted by a 15-1 edge on the offensive glass. Junior forward Mike Campbell (Bronx, NY/Samuel Gompers) came off the bench to power his way to 13 points and 11 rebounds—seven offensive—in only 12 minutes in the first period.
Overall, Campbell led the way for FSC, compiling 28 points (11-16 FG) and 15 rebounds in only 20 minutes of action. He was 5-of-13 from the line. NJCU limited senior guard Damien Santana (Brooklyn, NY/Grady) to six first half points, but he poured in 20 in the second half, finishing with 26 points (7-17), including 10-of-11 from the line. He added six rebounds, four assists and four steals in 35 minutes.
Four players in all reached double figures for the hosts. Senior guard Joe Cammarata (Levittown, NY/MacArthur) shot 4-of-6 from three-point distance and finished with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Junior forward Daniel Phillips (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) added 10 points (4-9).
Freshman center
TAQUAN ABDULLAH (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley) led three NJCU players in double figures with 14 points on 4-of-4 shooting and 6-of-6 from the line in 18 minutes before fouling out. Senior guard
KYLE INGRAM (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) scored all 13 of his points, including three three-pointers, in the first half. Freshman small forward
RASHAWN SMALLS (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson), the four-time New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, had his lowest career output, collecting 12 points (5-12 FG). Freshman forward
FARRAKHAN WELLS (Newark, NJ/West Side) had nine points in 13 minutes before fouling out.
NJCU will begin the second half of its schedule on Saturday, January 3, 2009 when it visits the College of Staten Island in Staten Island, NY at 2:30 p.m.
