- Carolina Garcia became thew first NJCU player in two seasons to score 30 points and contributed 10 of NJCU's final 18 points.

New Jersey City University junior guard CAROLINA GARCIA (Plainfield, NJ/ Franklin) rocketed her way to a career and team season-high 30 points and the Gothic Knights rallied after surrendering a 15-point second half lead to defeat California Institute of Technology, 60-52, in the second round of the 2008 Caltech-Claremont Holiday Classic at Cal Tech's Braun Center on Sunday afternoon.

NJCU, which had a 22-10 advantage in points in the paint, only committed 14 turnovers to improve to 3-7 overall. Caltech falls to 2-9. NJCU leads the all-time series, 2-0 and improves to 2-4 all-time in the state of California.

Garcia easily established a new career scoring high with 30 points on 11-of-26 shooting and 2-of-4 from three-point range, while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing four assists in a full 40 minutes. She crushed her previous season and career best of 21 points on November 23 against Stevens Institute of Technology. She became the first NJCU player to score 30 since current assistant coach Latrese McNair tallied 31 against Ramapo College on January 24, 2007.

Junior forward SHAYLA DANIELS (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) came off the bench to contribute 14 points (5-9 FG) and seven rebounds (five offensive) in 21 minutes. Garcia (10) and Daniels (6) combined to score 16 of NJCU's final 18 points

One game after grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds, junior swing TIFFANY ADAMS (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) seized 11 rebounds—10 defensive—with three assists in 39 minutes.
Freshman guard JANAYA MORRIS (Bronx, NY/FLAGS (NY) registered eight rebounds (seven offensive) in a full 40 minutes. Freshman forward/center PATIENCE BROWN (Plainfield, NJ/Union County Vo. Tech) pulled down eight rebounds and scored seven points.

The Beavers received a double-double of 12 rebounds (10 defensive) and 10 points from junior forward Lisa Yee (Los Angeles, CA/Lincoln) and a team-high 14 points from junior guard Jessica Roberts (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre), while freshman forward Theresa Juarez (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) tallied 10 points (4-5 FG). Freshman guard Erin Hoops (El Dorado Hills, CA/Oakridge) finished with nine rebounds (seven offensive), seven points and five assists.

NJCU never trailed in the first half and pulled in front by double figures when Morris connected on a three and Garcia had a layup with 3:52 remaining for a 30-18 lead. Garcia hit a jumper with 1:46 left in the period for a 14-point cushion, 34-20, and led 38-25 at the half.

NJCU gained its largest lead of the game moments into the second half when a Morris layup that made it a 15-point, 40-25 advantage with 18:58 remaining.

But Caltech reeled off a 19-2 run, limiting the Gothic Knights to 1-of-14 shooting over a span of 10:21 and took its first lead at 44-42 with 9:48 remaining on a Roberts layup. She had seven points during the run.

Garcia
finally ended the drought with a jumper at 8:36 to tie it at 44-44 and put NJCU in front with two free throws. Roberts tied it again at 7:37 with a basket and sophomore guard Lisha Li (New York, NY/Stuyvesant) gave the hosts their final lead of the game, 47-46, with the back-end of two free throws with 6:27 left.

Daniels
put the Knights in front for good with an offensive rebounds and putback with 6:10 left, 48-47, and converted a pair of free throws for a 50-47 edge. Hoops cut it to 50-49 before Brown scored off an assist from Daniels for a 52-49 lead with 2:28 on the clock.

Daniels
extended the lead to 54-49 with another offensive rebounds and follow with 2:07 remaining. Garcia provided the eventual winning margin when she drilled a three with 1:08 left for a 57-50 advantage and sank 3-of-4 free throws in the final 44 seconds to seal it with a 60-50 lead. NJCU had 19 second chance points in the game.

While Garcia and Daniels carried NJCU late in the second period, the Knights were solid defensively, limiting the Beavers to only one field goal (1-10) in the final 7:36 before Caltech scored at the closing buzzer. The Beavers committed six turnovers during this span and shot 2-of-6 from the line.

NJCU will be inactive until Wednesday, January 7, 2009 when it hosts William Paterson University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference North Division contest at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center at 6 p.m.
