MONTCLAIR, NJ…
Freshman guard LASHAWN OVERTON (Jersey City, NJ/Snyder) scored 17 of her game, career and team-season high 26 points in the second half, but Montclair State University, which took control with a 12-0 first half run to break open a tight game, defeated New Jersey City University, 74-62, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference North Division women's basketball game on Wednesday night at the Montclair Student Rec Center.

NJCU falls to 1-5 and 0-1 in the NJAC with its third straight loss. MSU snaps its three-game losing streak and improves to 2-4 (1-0 NJAC).

In defeat, Overton, who shot 10-of-20 from the field, 2-of-4 from three-point range and 4-of-4 from the line, added six steals, four rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes. Her 26 points were the most by an NJCU player since ANGELA FITZGERALD tallied 28 against Farmingdale State on November 28, 2007. It was the highest road scoring output by an NJCU player since Latrese McNair scored 31 at MSU on January 13, 2007.

While Overton, the NJAC Rookie of the Week in week two of the season led NJCU, MSU was led by freshman guard Jaime Ericson (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central), who has won the only other two Rookie of the Week awards this year. She came off the bench to lead the Red Hawks with 17 points (6-8 FG), including 3-of-4 from three-point range, with eight rebounds in 22 minutes.

In defeat, freshman guard EBONY CUNNINGHAM (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) collected 16 points (8-19 FG), five rebounds and three steals in 33 minutes before fouling out. Junior guard CAROLINA GARCIA (Plainfield, NJ/Franklin) added 10 points (4-14 FG, 2-4 3FG) and four assists.

Freshman point guard NIDIA CARMONA (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) chipped in eight rebounds, six points and four assists and junior forward came SHAYLA DANIELS (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) added seven rebounds and four points.

All of NJCU's scoring came from its five starters as Montclair's bench outscored the Knights, 25-0 in that area.

MSU received a double-double from junior forward Kisandra Ayanbeku (Burlington, MA/Randolph) who had 10 points and 10 rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting while junior forward Catherine Cristino (Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck) had 13 points, five rebounds and five blocks. Sophomore guard Jamilee Pflug (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) had 11 points and five assists and senior guard Marianne McGovern (Fair Lawn, NJ/Paramus Catholic) added nine points and five assists.

Leading 13-11 with 13:35 left in the first half, MSU scored 12 unanswered points over a span of 4:30 to build a 25-11 margin, capped by a three from Ericson and a Cristino jumper. MSU, which shot 53.6 percent in the first half (15-28), 4-of-6 from three-point distance (.667) and 6-of-7 from the line, led 40-24 at the intermission.

MSU built its largest lead of the game with 5:59 left, a 72-40, 32-point cushion with a 22-8 run midway though the second half—many points coming after Garcia left the game after being elbowed while scrambling for a loose ball. Overton tried to will her team back into the contest, scoring 11 consecutive points for the Gothic Knights over a 2:35 stretch late in the second half as NJCU concluded the game on a 22-2 run, but could not draw closer than 12.

NJCU will return to action on Saturday, December 6 at 2 p.m. when it hosts Rutgers University-Camden at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on Charlie Brown Court.
