GAME PROGRAM
JERSEY CITY, NJ…New Jersey City University scored the first 18 points of the game en route to a rout, and broke the team single-game school record with 15 blocked shots as the Gothic Knights led 53-17 at halftime and cruised to an 80-46 win over Berkeley College in a non-conference men's game on Charlie Brown Court at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on Saturday.
NJCU, facing the Bulldogs for the first time, wins its second straight game to improve to 3-3 overall while Berkeley falls to 0-6 overall. NJCU's 15 rejections eclipse the known single-game record of 14 against Rutgers-Newark on December 2, 2000.
The victory marked the 83rd time in the 76-year history of the program that NJCU defeated an opponent by 30 or more points.
In a game where all 12 players who dressed saw between 12 and 22 minutes, 11 scored and had at least three points. Amazing, 10 of 12 players had at least one block for NJCU and no one had more than
three in establishing a true team record.
Freshman small forward
RASHAWN SMALLS (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson), the three-time New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, scored a game-high 17 points in only 20 minutes on 8-of-15 shooting, and had 12 in the first half. He added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals and evened his own personal best with five dunks.
Smalls helped key NJCU to an impressive 22-2 advantage in fast-break points.
Freshman forward
FARRAKHAN WELLS (Newark, NJ/Westside) had a career-high 13 points (4-5 FG) in 17 minutes while senior guard
KYLE INGRAM (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) chipped in eight of his 10 points (3-5 FG) in the first half. He added seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 21 minutes.
Also for NJCU, freshman center
TAQUAN ABDULLAH (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley) contributed a team season-high 11 rebounds (seven defensive) with nine points in 22 minutes. Junior guard
ANWAR KING (Linden, NJ/Willingboro) chipped in five points, four assists and four steals.
In defeat, the Bulldogs received 12 points (4-6 FG) from guard Richard Webb (Newark, NJ/Weequahic) and 11 points by forward Marcus Jones (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). Forward Savereo Jackson (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, with nine points and four blocks.
NJCU, which shot 56.8 percent in the first half (21-37), finished at 42.5 percent overall (31-73) and .500 percent from three-point distance (5-10). The Bulldogs were limited to 16.1 percent shooting in the first
half (5-31) and .270 for the game (17-63). NJCU owned a 56-39 rebounding margin and used 18 steals to build a 26-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
NJCU opened the flood gates from the initial tip, exploding to an 18-0 lead as Smalls scored six of the first nine points and four of NJCU's first eight baskets were dunks. Consecutive slams by Wells and Smalls made it 18-0 at 14:39 before Berkeley scored its first points—a free throw—at 13:52, and NJCU pulled its starting lineup.
The Bulldogs sank their first field goal with 10:27 remaining in the opening period after missing their first 16 shots. NJCU held leads of 28-3 and 34-6 before heading to the half ahead by 36, 53-17. The Knights' largest lead was 38, a 55-17 advantage, in the opening minute of the second half. The NJCU starting lineup was largely inactive in the second half.
NJCU returns to action on Tuesday, December 16 at 8 p.m. when it visits Farmingdale State College in a non-conference game in Farmingdale, NY. Berkeley visits Montclair State University on December 10 at 7:30 p.m.
