NEWARK, NJ…
Rutgers-Newark scored twice in a span of 2:32 early in the second half to break open a scoreless game, and New Jersey City University, playing the Scarlet Raiders in the rain, was only able to attempt one shot, as Newark defeated the Gothic Knights, 2-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Saturday night at Alumni Field.

With the win, Newark improved to 5-4 and 1-2 in the league, while NJCU, following a 6-0 start to the season, dropped to 6-3 and 0-3 in the league. The Raiders lead the all-time series, 9-0.

The Raiders did a solid job marking NJCU sophomore striker JENNIFER ALBUJA (Union City, NJ/Hoboken), the Division III national leader in goals and points per game, as she could only attempt one shot. Newark outshot the Knights, 18-1 with nine shots in each period. Newark freshman Jessica Gavilanes (Orange, NJ/Union Catholic) led the Raiders' defensive effort.

NJCU sophomore keeper KELLY REILLY (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Memorial) kept the Knights in the game, making five saves.

The Raiders finally got on the board at 50:36. Freshman Julia Caseres (Union, NJ/Union) had her shot blocked to the left of the goal before junior midfielder Whitney Huber (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) knocked in the rebound with a header that just snuck under the crossbar for her fifth goal.

Huber then redirected a corner kick from freshman forward Stefani Uthman (Ringwood, NJ/Lakeland Regional) from the left side onto the foot of freshman Amanda Moursy (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford), wide open in front, for a 2-0 lead at 53:08. The double-assisted play gave Moursy her fifth goal.

Freshman keeper Kat Renteria (North Bergen, NJ/Cliffside Park) recorded her first career solo shutout for the Raiders, without a save.

NJCU will seek to snap its three-game losing streak when it hosts Ramapo College in an NJAC game on Wednesday, October 1 at 4 p.m. at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
