MAHWAH, NJ…
Ramapo College used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to break open a two-possession game as the Roadrunners defeated New Jersey City University, 58-47, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference North Division game on Wednesday night at the Bill Bradley Center.

The win for Ramapo (7-10, 2-5 NJAC) ends a four-game skid and snaps NJCU's five-game winning streak in the series, which RCNJ leads 28-24 (one missing result). NJCU (4-12, 1-5 NJAC) loses for the third straight game.

The schools combined for 50 turnovers, with 27 committed by NJCU. Ramapo had a 25-17 edge in points off giveaways. NJCU only attempted three free throws the entire night and RCNJ committed just six fouls.

In defeat, junior forward SHAYLA DANIELS (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) grabbed at least 15 rebounds in a game for the second time this season, finishing with 15 (nine offensive) and eight points; she had eight turnovers.

Ramapo senior forward Tiffany China (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, including 8-of-8 from the line. She added five boards and three steals.

For NJCU, junior guard CAROLINA GARCIA (Plainfield, NJ/Franklin) and freshman guard EBONY CUNNINGHAM (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) each had 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals for the game, with Garcia playing 40 minutes.

NJCU freshman guard LASHAWN OVERTON (Jersey City, NJ/Snyder), a four-time NJAC Rookie of the Week, entered with a league-best 20.2 points per game in five NJAC contests, but was limited to eight points on 4-of-20 shooting (0-of-7 three-pointers). She did have three steals.

Ramapo had a 13-3 margin in assists, with seven assists and seven rebounds coming from sophomore guard Brittany Hoffman (Belford, NJ/Middletown South). Junior center Beth Weinmann (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) led the Roadrunners with 10 rebounds (seven defensive) and seven points. Sophomore guard Stephanie Cannizzaro (Pequannock, NJ/Pequannock) had eight points, seven rebounds and six steals. Freshman forward Lindsey Gripenburg (Bloomingdale, NJ/Butler) had nine points and six caroms.

In a back-and-forth first half, RCNJ opened an 8-2 lead before NJCU answered with a 12-2 run to gain a 14-10 margin. A Garcia three with 10:17 left in the opening half gave NJCU its largest lead, 17-12, before Ramapo responded by scoring 12 consecutive points to seize a 24-17 advantage and would not trail again.

RCNJ, which led at the half, 31-23, twice saw its lead dwindle to two, including with 15:12 remaining on an Overton jumper, and it remained a five-point deficit with 9:03 left after Cunningham scored to reduce the Roadrunner lead to 40-35. But the Ramapo bench provided some key scoring, including back-to-back baskets by Gripenburg and RCNJ jumped out to a 50-35 lead with 6:28 left before winning by 11.

NJCU is back in action on Saturday, January 24 at 5 p.m. when it hosts Richard Stockton College in an NJAC game at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on Homecoming 2009.
