JERSEY CITY…William Paterson University grabbed the opening tip-off and never looked back, delivering 18 of its 27 assists in the first half to build a 38-point halftime advantage while shooting 52.2 percent from the field (35-67) in defeating the
New Jersey City University, 93-51, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference North Division game played Wednesday night on Charlie Brown Court at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center. Six players reached double figures for the Pioneers, who also shot 56.3 percent from three-point territory (9-16) and a perfect 14-of-14 from the line.
WPU improves to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC while winning for the fifth time in six outings. The Pioneers also defeated NJCU (3-8, 1-2 NJAC) for the 13th straight meeting since 2001-02. WPU leads the known all-time series, 45-9.
In defeat, freshman point guard
LASHAWN OVERTON (Jersey City, NJ/Snyder) matched her career high with 26 of NJCU's 51 points, shooting 11-of-34 in a full 40 minutes of action. She added three assists and two steals.
Junior guard Erin Cook (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) had 12 of her 16 points (6-12 FG, 4-6 3FG) in the first half and brought down six rebounds in 23 minutes of action. Junior guard Jillian Kane (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) came off the bench to drop a team-best 17 points, shooting 6-11 from the floor, 2-4 from behind the arc, and 3-3 from the free-throw line in 17 minutes.
Junior guard Julie Haledjian (Montvale, NJ/Pascack Hills) finished with 12 points (5-7 FG) and seven assists in 20 minutes. All seven of her assists came in the opening period. Freshman guard BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) finished with a game-best nine assists with seven contributed in the first period, and added six points and five steals.
Also for WPU, sophomore forward April Smith (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) had 13 points (4-8), six rebounds, and two blocks. Junior forward Deidra Thompson (Prospect Park, NJ/Paterson Eastside) had 11 points (5-6 FG) off the bench as WPU had a 36-9 advantage in bench scoring. Sophomore forward Absatu Mustapha (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) was the sixth player in double figures, adding 10.

EBONY CUNNINGHAM (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) had a game-high 10 rebounds (seven offensive) with seven points and three steals in 32 minutes. Sophomore center

In a first half where WPU shot .553 from the field (21-38) and .538 from long distance (7-13), its ball distribution made the difference. The Pioneers had assists on 18 of their first 21 baskets while NJCU collected only three in the period. The Pioneers raced out to a 27-5 lead in the first 6:31 and owned a 40-point margin (58-18) late in the half.
WPU did not waiver in the second half, eventually attaining their largest lead of 50 points with 9:36 left in the game (79-29). NJCU shot .282 overall (20-71) and 8-of-24 from the line (.333).
NJCU will return to action on Saturday, January 10 at 1 p.m. when it visits The College of New Jersey. WPU travels to Richard Stockton College that day for a 2 p.m. contest.
