JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...New Jersey City University sophomore striker JULIA CASERES (Union, NJ/Union) of the women's soccer team is featured in the October 5, 2009 issue of Sports Illustrated, after making an immediate impact during the month of September in her first season as a member of the Gothic Knights. Caseres, the current Division III national leader in both total goals and points per game (4.00), is the 10th NJCU student-athlete to appear in Sports Illustrated since 2000.

She is the eighth Gothic Knight published in the magazine's “Faces in the Crowd” section. Caseres is also the second women's soccer player featured by SI—the first since December 2000.

Caseres, a two-time New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week selection this season on September 7 and 14, and one-time ECAC Division III Player of the Week, scored 18 goals with eight assists for 44 points in 12 games during the month of September, scoring in seven matches. She notched six multiple-goal games, four hat tricks, six unassisted goals and three game-winners.

During the week of September 8-13, Caseres had a mind-boggling 10 goals and seven assists for 27 points in a four-game span that included winning the 2009 Scarlet Raider Women's Soccer Classic in Newark, NJ. It was the first championship of any kind ever won by NJCU in women's soccer in the 17-year history of the program.

Caseres, who scored 22 goals in 20 games as a freshman in 2008 while playing for Rutgers-Newark, helped her new team defeat the Raiders in a historical New Jersey Athletic Conference game on September 26. Caseres netted a hat trick in NJCU's 5-1 victory over the Raiders, scoring the first, third and fourth goals of the contest, as the Knights snapped a 103-game conference losing streak which had dated to 1994.

As of October 5, Caseres leads the NJAC in nearly every offensive category—points (44), points per game (3.38), goals (18), goals per game (1.38), assists (8), shots (92), and shots per game (7.08).

ROBERT BIELAN, head women's soccer coach, said: “She likes to be part of the creative process, and she has stepped up big for us this season. Her work ethic at practice and on the game field amazes me, and she carries her work ethic over into her academics which I am most proud of her for.”
