COOKE’S 17 NOT ENOUGH AS WESLEYAN DOWNS NJCU, 70-54

- Miesha Cooke scored 29 points in two games to earn selection to the All-Tournament Team.

Junior transfer guard MIESHA COOKE (Paterson, NJ/Sports Business Academy) led the Gothic Knights in scoring for the second straight game to earn All-Tournament Team accolades, but her 17-point performance wasn't enough as Wesleyan University defeated New Jersey City University, 70-54, in the consolation game of the Stevens Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday night at Canavan Arena.
 
Wesleyan (1-1) made 22-of-29 free throws, shooting 75.9 percent from the stripe to win the first meeting between the schools. The loss saw NJCU drop to 0-3 to start the year.
 
Cooke, who scored 29 points in two tournament games, led the club in both scoring and rebounding. Her 17 points came on 7-of-17 shooting, while she grabbed eight boards (six defensive) with two steals. Freshman point guard LATIFAH JOHNSON (Newark, NJ/University) tallied 12 points (5-9 FG) and six steals while sophomore forward EBONY CUNNINGHAM (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) added seven points (3-14 FG), five steals and four rebounds.
 
For Wesleyan, 6-foot-0 sophomore center Sam LaCroce (Prospect, CT) had 18 points (6-10 FG, 6-7 FT) while junior guard Erin Gold (New Hope, PA) added 14 points (9-11 FT, 2-7 FG), 10 rebounds (seven defensive) and five steals.
 
The Cardinals also received 13 points (6-11 FG), eight rebounds and three steals by 6-foot-1 sophomore center Eileen Gaffney (Manhasset, NY). Junior guard McKinley Tennant (Swampscott, MA) added seven points, six assists and five rebounds.
 
After NJCU scored first, the Cardinals took the lead 3:08 into the game and wouldn't trail again. Wesleyan opened an 11-4 lead and led by as many as 15 points in the first half (34-19), before owning a 35-23 cushion at the break. The Cardinals led by as many as 21 (54-23) midway through the second half before winning by 16.
 
NJCU will seek its first win of the year when it returns to action on Tuesday, November 24 at 6 p.m. against FDU-Florham.
