EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...Sophomore guard/forward EBONY CUNNINGHAM (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) notched her third consecutive double-double and freshman forward LINDIA FISCHER (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) achieved her first career double-double as five players reached double figures in scoring for the New Jersey City University women's basketball team in a 75-68 come-from-behind win over St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) in a non-conference game on Monday afternoon at the IZOD Center.
Playing on the floor of the NBA's New Jersey Nets, NJCU (2-7) trailed by six in the second half before outscoring the Bears (4-6), 16-5, midway through the period, to stake control. NJCU leads the all-time series with SJC, 4-2. The game marked the first time in known school history that NJCU played a game in the Meadowlands.
Cunningham scored 18 points (6-11 FG, 5-11 FT) with 11 rebounds and three steals, notching the ninth double-double of her career. Fischer had a career-best 12 points (4-10 FG)—eight in the second half—with 10 rebounds. Freshman point guard LATIFAH JOHNSON (Newark, NJ/University) delivered 11 of her 15 points in the second half and had eight rebounds.
Also for NJCU, which scored a season-high with its 75 points, freshman forward MAXINE KAMINSKI (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) had career highs of 11 points (5-9 FG) and nine rebounds while freshman guard ASHLEY FREEMAN (Paterson, NJ/Passaic Tech) totaled 11 points, five rebounds and four steals.
For the Bears, sophomore guard Ashley McQuillan (Brooklyn, NY/St. Francis Prep) had a game-best 24 points, shooting 10-of-13 from the floor. She added six steals, five rebounds and three assists. Also for SJC, junior forward Allison Kavanagh (Woodside, NY/Mary Louis) had 16 points (8-14 FG) and 11 rebounds (eight defensive) for a double-double. Senior center Julia Serewko (Woodside, NY/Mary Louis) totaled 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
