Farmingdale remains undefeated at 4-0 to open the year, despite committing 31 turnovers and shooting just 31.4 percent from the field, 1-of-8 from three-point range (.125) and 13-of-22 from the line (.591). Meanwhile, NJCU surrendered 42 turnovers, shot 9-of-22 from the line (.409), 36.5 percent from the field (19-52) and 1-of-7 from three-point range (.143). The Rams lead the all-time series, 7-2, winning for the fourth straight meeting.
The Rams scored 30 of their 58 points off of turnovers and had a 26-8 margin in steals. NJCU's 42 turnovers were the most committed by the Knights since giving away 39 on November 23, 2002 at Emmanuel College (MA) and the most since game records have been tracked.
Farmingdale was playing without D3hoops.com Preseason Third-Team All-American Kimberly Blakney (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Banneker), who entered the game averaging 22.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 7.3 steals per contest.
In her place, the Rams were led by senior guard Kamaya Miller (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) who filled the boxscore with 11 points (5-15 FG), 11 rebounds (eight defensive), 11 turnovers, eight steals, three assists and two blocks. Senior guard Juanita Chappel (Brooklyn, NY/Grand Street) finished with 10 points (3-8 FG), eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and only two turnovers in 39 minutes.
The Rams had four players in double figures. Sophomore forward Dominique Cunningham (Amityville, NY/Copiague) had 11 points (5-9 FG), four rebounds and two blocks in 19 minutes while junior guard Janel Monah (Westbury, NY/Westbury) added 10 points (3-10 FG) and six steals. Senior guard Tiffara Steward (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) sized up four steals.
NJCU freshman forward LINDIA FISCHER (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) had a strong effort, particularly on the glass, where she collected a game and team season high 12 rebounds (10 defensive), adding eight points (4-9 FG), despite eight turnovers. Sophomore forward EBONY CUNNINGHAM (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) tallied 11 points (4-10 FG), nine rebounds and three steals, but also had eight turnovers. Junior guard MIESHA COOKE (Paterson, NJ/Sports Business Academy) finished with 11 points (3-11 FG, 5-8 FT) in 33 minutes.
Also for the Knights, freshman guard ASHLEY FREEMAN (Paterson, NJ/Passaic Tech) totaled seven points (3-6 FG), five rebounds and four assists in 19 minutes and freshman forward MAXINE KAMINSKI (Kearny, NJ/Kearny)—making her first career start— chipped in six rebounds and four points.
Farmingdale would score the first seven points of the game—all by Dominique Cunningham—before NJCU scored the next eight, for an 8-7 lead with 14:26 left in the opening half. Leading 11-10, the Rams scored 15 of the next 19 points over a span of 6:54, claiming a 26-14 edge with 3:03 remaining in the half. FSC would head to the intermission leading by 14, 31-17. The Rams led by as many as 18 points in the second half. NJCU was twice able to whittle the deficit to 10 points—including the final margin—but was unable to draw closer than that.
NJCU returns to the floor on Saturday, December 5 at 1 p.m. when it faces Richard Stockton College in Pomona, NJ in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both schools. Farmingdale will face Sage College on the road in a Skyline Conference game at the same time.
