STOCKTON STAKES ITSELF TO LARGE FIRST-HALF ADVANTAGE, DEFEATS NEW JERSEY CITY IN 2009-10 NJAC OPENER

Richard Stockton College used its notable size advantage and 17 first half Gothic Knight turnovers to surge out to a 20-3 lead early in the opening period and the Ospreys defeated New Jersey City University, 88-62 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both schools on Saturday at the Stockton Sports Center. Freshman point guard LATIFAH JOHNSON (Newark, NJ/University) notched a career-high and game-best 22 points in defeat.
 
Stockton (5-1, 1-0 NJAC) won its fourth consecutive game as five Ospreys scored in double figures. NJCU drops to 0-6 overall (0-1 NJAC) against a difficult schedule. The Gothic Knights six opponents to start the year have a current combined record of 21-15. Stockton defeated NJCU for the 16th consecutive time since 1998 and leads the all-time series, 38-12.
 
In defeat, three players scored in double digits for NJCU, led by Johnson with 22 on 9-of-14 shooting (2-3 3FG), with five rebounds, five assists and three steals before fouling out. Sophomore forward EBONY CUNNINGHAM (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) finished with 13 points and five rebounds and freshman guard ASHLEY FREEMAN (Paterson, NJ/Passaic Tech) totaled 10 points (3-8 FG, 2-4 3FG). Freshman center KIARA DENSON (Garfield, NJ/Garfield) had seven points (3-5 FG) in 11 minutes in the first half before leaving with an injury.
 
Stockton shot 52.5 percent from the field (32-61), highlighted by a 60.0 percent performance in the opening half (21-35). Sophomore guard Aliyah Nelson (Pleasantville, NJ/St. Joseph)scored seven of Stockton's first nine points as the Ospreys began the game on a 26-5 run and never looked back in the victory. She finished with a career-high 20 points (5-8 FG, 9-10 FT), six rebounds and five assists.
 
Also for Stockton, sophomore center LaTonya Oliver (West Berlin, NJ/Overbrook)scored 17 points (7-14 FG) while junior forward Julia Fagan (New Britain, CT/New Britain) had 15 points (5-6 FG), seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Freshman forward Che`Na Thompson (Salem, NJ/Salem) tossed in 13 points  (5-9 FG) and four assists and freshman forward Noelle Hogan (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) came off the bench to score 11 points (5-8 FG) and grab five boards in 13 minutes.
 
The second half was much closer as Stockton outscored NJCU, 38-35 in the period. The two schools combined for 52 turnovers in the game. The Ospreys largest lead was 29 with 17:19 left in the second half (59-30). NJCU, which had made only 12 three-pointers in the first five games of the year, converted six in defeat.
