JERSEY CITY, NJ…
Sophomore outside hitter AJ SAFAVI (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) had career highs of seven service aces and six kills and freshman outside hitter KENNY LISK (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) posted nine kills and five aces as New Jersey City University landed at least 25 aces in a match for the fourth time in school history and swept past Medgar Evers College, 3-0 (30-8, 30-10, 30-8) in a non-divisional men's volleyball match on Sunday morning on 'Charlie Brown Court' at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

NJCU wins its third straight and concluded a five-match homestand to open the 2009 season with a 4-1 record. Medgar Evers College, which suffered its 20th consecutive loss, is 0-4. NJCU leads the all-time
series, 6-0.

The 25 aces were the most by an NJCU team since serving 28—also against Medgar Evers—on February 5, 2005. NJCU had 11 aces in the opening set alone.

As a team, NJCU also collected a season-high .466 hitting percentage for the second time in three matches, landing 34 kills with only seven errors on 58 attempts. MEC hit -.290 with four kills (4-13-31).

Lisk
floored nine kills and hit .615 (9-1-13), while landing five aces himself. Sophomore outside hitter MARLEY PENA-GUZMAN (Atlanta, GA/Central Gwinnett (GA)) chalked up a .778 hitting percentage with seven kills and no errors on nine attempts—most coming in the first two games before re-entering the match as a setter in the third set. He finished with two aces and three assists. In all, three NJCU players had more kills individually than MEC tallied as a team.

Junior defensive specialist/setter FELIPE SIQUEIRA (Newark, NJ/Science) collected 15 assists and four aces while sophomore setter JUSTIN BEAUMONT (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) distributed 10 assists on 15 attempts for a .667 setting percentage and had three aces in two sets of action.

MEC received five digs apiece from freshman opposite Kevin De Haarte (Brooklyn, NY/Kingston Coll.) and freshman outside hitter Eric Anderson (Guyana, WI/Covent Garden).

NJCU hit .500 in the opening set (10-2-16) and rolled to a 17-4 lead, winning 30-8. The Knights posted seven aces in each of the final two sets. Safavi had 11 consecutive quality serves in the second set and the Knights vaulted out to a 22-3 lead before winning, 30-10. NJCU's reserves primarily were responsible for an even better attack percentage in the final set, as the Knights were errorless and hit .556 with 10 winners (10-0-18). NJCU jumped ahead 23-5, before cruising to victory.

NJCU is back in action on Wednesday, February 4 at 7:30 p.m. when it visits York College (NY) in Jamaica, NY. MEC hosts York on February 3 at 7 p.m.
