JERSEY CITY, NJ…Junior forward
SHAYLA DANIELS (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) recorded the most rebounds by a
New Jersey City University player in nearly 13 years, seizing a career-best 24, while adding 10 points for her fourth double-double of the season as the Gothic Knights snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 70-65 victory over Ramapo College
in a New Jersey Athletic Conference North Division women's basketball game on Wednesday night on Charlie Brown Court at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center. NJCU limited the visitors to one point in the final 4:09 of the game.
NJCU (5-19, 2-10 NJAC) and Ramapo (9-14, 4-8 NJAC) split the season series with each team winning on their home court. Ramapo leads the all-time series, 28-25, but the Knights have won six of the last seven meetings between the schools. Ramapo was unable to gain ground in the NJAC standings on Rutgers-Newark, which also lost on Wednesday. Newark owns a half-game lead over RCNJ for the third and final NJAC Tournament berth in the North Division.
Daniels' 24 rebounds are tied for the ninth highest rebound total in school history and the most since Alexis Nelson grabbed 26 on November 27, 1996. This was Daniels' second 20-rebound game this season and the team's third. It also represents the 31st known 20-rebound game in NJCU history.
Daniels played 39 minutes and had 10 offensive and 14 defensive boards, shooting 4-of-10 overall with two blocks. It was her 10th double digit rebounding game of the season and her fifth straight; she has 87 rebounds over her last five games or 17.4 per contest and now leads the league with 10.5 rebounds in conference games. Her 24 rebounds were the most by any player in the NJAC this year, eclipsing the 22 that Hillary Klimowicz had for The College of New Jersey on January 24.
While
Daniels board play highlighted NJCU's win, its two rookie sensations each scored 21 points. Freshman point guard
LASHAWN OVERTON (Jersey City, NJ/Snyder) netted 21 points (8-22 FG), including 3-of-8 from three-point distance, adding six rebounds and six assists in 38 minutes. It was her sixth 20-point performance of the year—all coming during NJAC games.
Freshman guard
EBONY CUNNINGHAM (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus) also scored 21 points (8-18 FG) with two three-pointers, adding five rebounds, four assists, and four steals in a career-high 40 minutes of action. Junior guard
CAROLINA GARCIA (Plainfield, NJ/Franklin) had 13 points, five assists and two steals in a full 40 minutes of action.
Garcia, a two-sport starter for NJCU,has now played a full 40 minutes 12 times this season and nine times in the last ten games.
The Roadrunners were led by junior center Beth Weinmann (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock), who put up a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds (10 defensive) while shooting 9-of-11 from the field. She added three blocks in 33 minutes of action. Sophomore guard Stephanie Cannizzaro (Pequannock, NJ/Pequannock) had 21 points (8-19 FG), seven rebounds, and seven assists in 36 minutes.
Ramapo led for much of the first half before a three-pointer by Garcia with 8:03 left gave NJCU its first edge since the first minute of the game (17-16). Tied at 19 with 5:36 left in the period, the Roadrunners pieced together a 16-5 run and led 35-24 with 1:27 remaining in the period as Weinmann, who scored the final six points of the spurt after Cannizzaro had hit a pair of threes, connected on a basket. Cunningham hit a three for NJCU with 1:07 left and Garcia sank a buzzer-beater from the top of the key to end the half down by six, 35-29.
RCNJ led by 10 at three junctures early in the second half, including 45-35 with 16:30 remaining. But NJCU outscored the visitors 41-30 in the second half and strung together a 12-2 run, tying the game at 47-47 with 12:01 to go on a fast-break lay-up by Overton. A three by Cunningham put NJCU in front, 51-50 before freshman forward Lindsey Gripenburg (Bloomingdale, NJ/Butler) scored four of her nine points for a 53-52 lead. A Garcia jumper (8:31) and Overton triple (8:12) off a turnover put the Knights ahead 57-53, but the Roadrunners would not go away.
The teams traded leads and the game was tied 60-60 with 5:38 left before Weinmann had a jumper with 4:42 left and an NJCU turnover led to a Cannizzaro layup, as Ramapo pulled in front by four, 64-60, with 4:09 on the clock. It was the last basket Ramapo would score.
Cunningham scored at 3:27 off a feed from Overton and Cunningham sank two free throws after being fouled with 2:30 left. Still tied at 64, Daniels was sent to the line after being fouled but missed both free throws. However, a lane violation was called on Cannizzaro and Daniels buried her second chance shot, as well as the Roadrunners' hopes, as the Gothic Knights did not relinquish the lead again.
Overton created separation with a jumper at 1:17 for a 67-64 edge and Daniels, Overton and freshman forward PATIENCE BROWN (Plainfield, NJ/Union County Vo. Tech) each sank free throws in the final minute for the 70-65 victory.
The Gothic Knights close the 2008-09 season on Wednesday, February 18at 6 p.m., against Rutgers-Newark in a NJAC North Division contest. The Roadrunners will face William Paterson University at home on Saturday, February 14at 1 p.m., also in an NJAC North Division game.
