NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ…New Jersey City University junior
JENN MARMO (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) became the first player in the five-year history of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's Bowling Singles Championship to qualify for the single-elimination playoff round in three consecutive years, finishing ninth overall with a four-game average of 195.25, but was eliminated in a first-round match, on day one of the 2009 ECAC Championship on Friday night at Brunswick Zone Carolier Lanes. The ECAC Championship is hosted annually by NJCU.
Marmo, who was the eighth seed as a freshman in 2007 and the #4 seed last year, took advantage of the expanded field, finishing ninth of 96 during the four-game qualifying portion of the championship. She had scores of 164-210-201-206 for a 781 set.
With 96 athletes competing—the largest field in the event's history—the playoff bracket was expanded from eight quarterfinalists in 2008 to 12 players this year. The top four seeds received a first round bye.
However, in the first round, Marmo was unable to advance, running into a roadblock in the form of Delaware State University junior Kalyn Washburn (Tucson, AZ), who won the match, 268-150. The 268 was the highest game rolled by any player in the 406 total games played during Friday's qualifying and playoff rounds. In addition to setting an ECAC record by reaching the playoffs three straight years, Marmo also became the first player in ECAC history to qualify for the championship bracket more than twice in a career, sequentially or not.
Just to reach the playoffs was an accomplishment. Marmo was tied for 61st after the first game of qualifying, was 23rd after the second game, and stood 17th after three rotations.
Junior All-American CANDICE D'ANGELO (Coram, NY/Longwood (NY) also nearly qualified. She was in 10th place after three rounds, thanks to a 235 game, before finishing tied for 21st overall. She had a four-game pinfall of 754 (197-161-235-161, 188.5)
