NJCU POUNDS OUT 22 HITS, SWEEPS RUTGERS-NEWARK, 12-3 AND 5-4

- Danielle Delfino sparked NJCU to 22 hits, notching five at the top of the lineup.

Sophomore second baseman DANIELLE DELFINO (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) was a combined 5-for-7 in two games and New Jersey City University pounded out 22 hits as the Gothic Knights swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader from Rutgers-Newark, 12-3 in five innings and 5-4, on Monday at Alumni Field.
 
NJCU improved to 13-15 overall and 3-7 in the NJAC by winning its fourth consecutive game while defeating the Scarlet Raiders (3-23, 0-10 NJAC) for the sixth straight time. NJCU leads the all-time series, 30-27.
 
The doubleheader was a make-up of a postponement on April 11. The Raiders committed a combined eight errors in two games; NJCU played flawless defense.
 
Senior right-hander pitcher ANDREA DELUCREZIA (Belleville, NJ/St. Mary's-Rutherford), the winner in game two, tied the career program record of 63 complete games, originally set by Hall-of-Famer Karen Masters from 1998-2001.
*******GAME 1: New Jersey City University 12, Rutgers-Newark 3*******
In game one, NJCU scored four times in the second inning and six more in the third to blow open the game which was halted after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
 
Delfino led NJCU's 10-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, with a walk while freshman shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) scored three runs, going 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI. Junior first baseman CHRISTINA PROSPERO (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) tacked on two RBIs, going 3-for-4 with one run.
 
Also for NJCU, senior third baseman CHRISTEN HALL (East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Regional) walked three times and scored twice.
 
Senior right-hander pitcher LACEY SKOWRONSKI (Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) evened her record at 7-7 overall. In 5.0 innings she allowed just three runs and four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
 
Newark junior pitcher Amber Affholter (Freehold, NJ/Southgate Anderson (MI)) was 2-for-2 with a two-run homerun—her first of the year. However, she also took the loss (2-11), allowing 12 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits, walking six with two Ks.
 
In the first inning, Ginter walked and scored on an error. NJCU had all nine batters come to the plate in the second inning, scoring twice. After the first two batters were retired in the inning, NJCU strung together six consecutive singles. Skowronski, Hall, Prospero and Perrucci all had RBI hits in the frame.
 
NJCU sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning, yet only had one hit. Delfino had an RBI single in the frame; the Knights were also aided by a pair of errors.
 
Newark, which scored its other run on a first inning RBI double, scored two in the fourth on a two-run homer by Affholter. NJCU tallied its final run in the fifth on a Prospero RBI single.
*******GAME 2: New Jersey City University 5, Rutgers-Newark 4*******
NJCU scored four times in the second inning of game two before Newark evened the score with four runs in the fourth. The Knights moved back in front in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore catcher ALEXANDRA DiIORIO (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) had a run-producing ground ball and Delucrezia limited the Scarlet Raiders to just one hit in the final two innings to preserve a 5-4 victory.
 
Delfino was 2-for-4 and Perrucci went 2-for-3 as NJCU collected 12 hits. Freshman center fielder NICOLE SARICA (Linden, NJ/Linden) contributed a 2-for-3 showing and sophomore right fielder STEPHANIE GOMEZ (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) chipped in a 2-for-3 game.
 
In defeat, Newark freshman shortstop Tina Aita (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) was 1-for-3 with a three-run homerun and sophomore center fielder Jessica Zelaya (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) finished 2-for-3 with a run.
 
Delucrezia (6-8) allowed five hits and four runs, fanning three while walking none in 7.0 innings. Junior Stacy Cappiello (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) took the loss (1-12), giving up five runs (four earned) and 12 hits with one strikeout.
 
NJCU scored four times on five hits in the second inning, aided by two Newark errors. Sarica and Gomez each had RBI singles in the inning while Perrucci, who had a one-out bunt single, scored on one error and DiIorio, who also reached on a bunt single, came home on a passed ball.
 
The Raiders scored four times on three runs in the fourth to tie it. Zelaya singled, moved over on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Affholter. Aita tied the game with a three-run homer, her second of the year, to left center.
 
In the fifth, Hall led off for NJCU with a double to center and Perrucci had a bunt single to put runners on the corners with one out. DiIorio grounded out to third base for an RBI, driving in sophomore JORDAN POTTER (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep), who pinch ran for Hall and scored the go-ahead run on the play.
 
Delucrezia set the Raiders down in order in the sixth with a fly ball and two line outs. She allowed a leadoff single in the seventh and a sacrifice moved the tying run into scoring position. But Hall erased the lead runner on a fielder's choice at third Delucrezia struck out the final batter swinging to seal it.
 
NJCU is back in action on Tuesday, April 13 at 3 p.m. when it visits Kean University (13-13, 4-4 NJAC) in an NJAC doubleheader in Union, NJ.
