JERSEY CITY, NJ…The College of New Jersey scored six runs in the eighth inning of game one to overcome an earlier five-run deficit and rallied past
New Jersey City University, 13-8 in game one of a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. TCNJ scored in every inning except for the sixth, and also claimed game two, 17-10, to earn a sweep of the twinbill. Game two was called due to darkness after eight innings as the two games took nearly seven hours to complete. Both contests were played under gusty winds blowing in off of Newark Bay after Friday's storms.
TCNJ, a long-time national power in baseball, evened its record at .500 overall (11-11-1 and 3-3 NJAC) while NJCU fell three games below .500 for only the second time this year at 11-14-1 (2-4 NJAC).
In defeat, senior catcher/right fielder
KRISTOPHER BRUS (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) continued his electric play. In the two games, he was a combined 6-for-9 and in his last 12 games is hitting a torrid .579 overall (22-38) with a .591 on-base percentage and 10 RBIs. He was 4-for-4 with two RBIs in game two.
The Lions' catcher, rookie Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) was a combined 6-for-10 with six RBIs, five RBIs, two homeruns and two doubles. Junior leftfielder Chris Esperon (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) was a combined 7-for-9 with four runs, four RBIs, a double, triple and homer.
Brus' former high school teammate, all-conference senior shortstop Jeff Toth (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial), was 5-for-9 with six runs and two RBIs in the two games.
