ALEX JOHANESEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) and split a pair of matches on Saturday at the 2009 NJAC/Skyline Crossover, hosted by Ramapo College at the Bill Bradley Center.
NJCU opened the day with its second straight win, sweeping SUNY-Purchase, 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
In the second match, St. Joseph's College (NY) snapped NJCU's 11-match winning streak in the series dating to the 2004 season, as the Eagles prevailed, 3-1 (25-12, 26-28, 25-19, 25-17). NJCU still leads the all-time series, 17-8.
In the opening match, freshman middle hitter MELISSA FLYNN
(Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) hit .429 with seven kills (7-1-14) and three blocks while senior outside hitter
MELISSA LOO (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) added six kills, hitting .211 (6-2-19), with four aces. Sophomore outside hitter
TABITHA JORDAN (Bayonne, NJ/Memorial) had six kills (6-3-15, .200) and seven digs.
Johanesen finished the match with 23 assists and two aces. Rookie libero
AMANDA DOPICO (West New York, NJ/Memorial) had nine digs.
NJCU's defense limited the Panthers to a negative attack percentage (16-17-59, -.017). In defeat, Purchase received seven kills from freshman middle hitter Taylor Edelmann (Bethel, CT/Bethel) and 13 assists by sophomore setter Mickaela Olson (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove).
In the nightcap, NJCU received a strong effort from Jordan with her first career double-double, compiling 18 digs and 11 kills—both career highs. She hit .152 (11-4-46). Dopico defended 21 digs and Johanesen delivered 25 assists and two aces. Loo had seven kills.
But the Eagles garnered 36 digs from sophomore Shannon Dempsey (Lake Grove, NY/Sachem North). Senior outside hitter Marwa Elembaby (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) had 16 kills, three aces and hit .361 (16-3-36) while sophomore hitter Brianna Meyer (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) chipped in 11 kills and hit .222 (11-5-27).
Senior setter Natalie Czelowalnik (Ronkonkoma, NY/Centereach) and sophomore setter Meaghan Caiazzo (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport) combined for 44 assists. Junior Allyson Franklin (East Islip, NY/East Islip) added 13 digs.
When NJCU won the second set to tie the match at 1-1, it had to come from behind after letting a 24-22 lead slip away. Down 25-24, Loo extended play with a kill. A kill by O'Connell again tied it at 26-26 before Johanesen floored a shot for a 27-26 lead and SJC made an attack error.
NJCU opens its 2009 home schedule and New Jersey Athletic Conference play when it hosts Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday, September 15 at 7 p.m. at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
