ROCKY MOUNT, NC (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...Defensive miscues led to #24 ranked North Carolina Wesleyan College scoring twice in a span of 30 seconds in the first half to seize a 2-0 lead and
New Jersey City University could never recover, dropping a 5-0 decision to the Battling Bishops, in the second round of the NCWC Roger Taylor Fall Classic at Scalf Field.
NJCU drops to 1-1-1 on the season while NCWC, ranked 24th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, is 2-1-0. The College of New Jersey won the tournament with a 2-0 record while the Bishops placed second. NJCU and Greensboro each were 0-1-1 on the weekend but the Knights finished fourth in the tournament based on goal differential.
NCWC leads the all-time series, 4-0. It was the first time NJCU lost a game by five goals since dropping a 7-2 decision to then #4 ranked Rowan University on October 27, 2002 and the first time being shutout by five goals since October 7, 1998.
NCWC only outshot NJCU in the first half, 7-4, yet led 3-0 at halftime. Overall, the Bishops had an 18-6 advantage in shots and the Knights did not have a shot on goal. It was the first time NJCU didn't have a shot on target since a double-overtime, 0-0 tie at Christopher Newport University on September 14, 2008.
For NCWC, sophomore midfielder Arkadiusz Trochowski (Hamburg, Germany/U. of App. Science), who had a goal and an assist, scored the eventual game-winner at 10:20 of the first half off a pass from senior midfielder Edgar Zaldivar (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac), who had two assists in the game.
Freshman forward Michael Muhseler (Hanover, Germany/Garbsen) scored just 30 seconds later (10:50) for a 2-0 lead, before scoring the Bishops' third goal less than seven minutes later (17:32), off a Zaldivar assist. Muhseler finished with five points, on two goals and an assist.
NCWC capped its win with two goals in 1:36 midway through the second half as junior defender Gudmundur Palsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland/Flensborg) scored on a Muhseler assist and Trochowski found senior midfielder Robert Ivanovich (Nokesville, VA/Brentsville) for the final marker.
Sophomore goalie MANNY LOJO (Clark, NJ/Union Catholic) made two saves in defeat under pressure. NCWC junior Dennis Kommol (Hanover, Germany/U. of Paderborn) was credited with the shutout.
NJCU opens its home schedule at the newly enhanced and upgraded Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex on Wednesday, September 9 at 4 p.m. when it hosts John Jay College in a non-conference game.
