NJCU CRUSHES RUTGERS-CAMDEN FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

- Tom McDermott nearly had a double-double with 11 rebounds and nine points. He reached double figures on the boards for the fourth time in five games.

surged out to a 22-2 lead and was never challenged by Rutgers University-Camden, as the Gothic Knights won their third consecutive game with a 57-38 victory over the Scarlet Raptors in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Saturday afternoon at the Rutgers-Camden Gymnasium.
 
The 38 points is the lowest output NJCU has held an opponent to since an 82-34 rout of Pratt Institute early in the 1973-74 season—a span of 1,003 games. Additionally, it is the least scored by an NJAC opponent against the Knights since a 65-36 decision over William Paterson University (then Paterson State College) during the 1963-64 campaign.
 
NJCU (8-6, 3-2 NJAC) wins its third consecutive game and defeats Camden (4-9, 0-6 NJAC) for the 12th consecutive meeting and 40th time in the last 41 matchups. NJCU leads the all-time series, 50-4.
 
The Knights shot 55.6 percent from three-point range (5-9) and 46.7 percent from the field (21-45). Camden was limited to 21.8 percent shooting (12-55) and a mere 1-for-15 from three-point distance (.067).
 
Freshman small forward WALIK ALBRIGHT (Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) led all scorers with 13 points, on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting, with adding eight rebounds (seven defensive) in 25 minutes. Junior guard #ANTOINE ROGERS# (Trenton, NJ/Ewing) scored all 10 of his points in the first half before finishing with 10 points (4-10 FG), four assists and four rebounds.
 
Junior power forward TOM McDERMOTT (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) registered a game-best 11 rebounds (10 defensive) with nine points, on 4-of-5 shooting. He reached double figures on the boards for the fourth time in five games and the fifth time overall this season. Senior point guard JOSH LOPEZ (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary's (Jersey City)) shot 3-of-4 from three-point distance and 3-of-5 overall, finishing with nine points and two assists in 23 minutes.
 
In all, 11 different players scored for NJCU, who was without freshman power forward ISAIAH JOHNSON (East Orange, NJ/East Orange Campus), the two-time NJAC Rookie of the Week, due to illness, and senior guard KYLE INGRAM (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) with an injury.Junior forward ARMOND LUCAS (Union, NJ/Hillside), a transfer, made his debut in the game.
 
NJCU shot 12-of-24 in the opening 20 minutes (.500). Albright, Lopez and Rogers combined for 26 of NJCU's 31 first-half points as NJCU took a 31-13 margin to the locker room.
 
The only area NJCU struggled was from the line, where it made just 10-of-27 (.370). The Knights out-rebounded RUC, 44-33, including 32-18 on the defensive glass.
 
Camden, which has lost its last seven games and nine of its last 10, missed its first 11 shots and converted just 4-of-22 from the field while shooting 18.2 percent in the opening half. Its first field goal did not come until there was 6:59 remaining in the half, missing the first 11 shots of the game.
 
NJCU, which led by as many as 21 points in the first half, including 28-7 with 5:31 remaining on a Lopez triple, led by as many as 29 points on two occasions in the second period. NJCU led 53-24 with 5:15 remaining before prevailing by 19.
 
The top scorer and rebounder for Camden was junior forward Kevin Brown (Port Norris, NJ/Millville), finishing with nine points (3-8 FG) and seven rebounds (matching a team high).
 
NJCU will seek its fourth consecutive win on Monday, January 18 at 4 p.m. when it plays a non-conference home game against New York City College of Technology on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Jersey City, NJ.
